Band 8a: £51,706 to £58,210 a year per annum, pro rata  PERMANENT

The post will be based in Carmarthenshire. There is the possibility to be based in Carmarthen or Llanelli.


The post is advertised as a Band 8a. However, applicants who do not currently meet all the skills and competencies for the Band 8a role, are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be appointed under Agenda for Change Arrangement for Pay and Banding of Trainees (Annex 21) supported by a development plan for 2 years. The application of Annex 21 with pay protection at Band 7 may be considered for newly qualified psychologists until competencies are met for 8a, which will be expected to be met within 2 years. Following successful completion and successful attainment of skills and competences for the role, the post holder will then be paid at Band 8a (minimum point on the scale). Continued support and supervision will be provided in order to develop the practitioner to the Band 8a role. This will be an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified psychologist looking for career development.


As part of the Annex 21 process, there is no financial penalty to those who apply for this role where the percentage will cause a reduction in pay, subsequently a local protection would be put in place until the pay has caught up.

We are delighted to present the exciting career opportunity of a permanent full-time Band 8a/Annex 21( see below) post in Adult Mental Health to Doctoral level Psychologists covering Carmarthenshire, South West Wales.

In line with the Welsh Matrics (2, the successful candidate would provide bespoke, specialist and creative psychological interventions to individuals, based on the development of a complex, multi-theoretical formulation that encompasses historical, developmental, systemic and neuropsychological processes.

In addition, the successful candidate will be the senior resource for the geographical area.

This will be an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified psychologist looking for career development.

1. To provide a psychology service to clients within the service, across all sectors of care; providing highly specialist psychological assessment and therapy as well as specialised cognitive assessments of functioning.

2. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service's policies and procedures.

3. To act as a Specialist Resource, as the Senior Psychologist within the geographic district, providing advice and guidance on assessment, treatment and referrals to psychiatrists, CPN team managers and other agencies and settings.

4. To act as a Specialist Resource, within the geographic area, as a point of contact, advice and guidance for other psychological service staff i.e. band 7 psychologists or therapists and assistant psychologists etc.

5. To undertaking any routine line management duties as delegated by the UHB AMH Consultant Clinical Psychologist

6. To provide supervision to qualified psychologists, trainee psychologists,assistants/graduate psychologists and non-psychologist colleagues.

7. To offer advice and consultation on clients' psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and carers.

8. To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service
