Public Health Wales is seeking an experienced Epidemiological Data Scientist (Advanced) to join its Health Protection Division in Cardiff. In this senior role, the successful candidate will leverage data science techniques to enhance the work of the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC), focusing on the development of mathematical and epidemiological models to simulate infectious disease spread. Responsibilities include maintaining and improving existing surveillance systems, implementing advanced data science methodologies such as data linkage and machine learning, and collaborating with microbiologists to innovate surveillance approaches using whole genome sequencing data.

The role requires strong data science, health informatics, and project management skills to address complex public health issues, manage projects, and report findings to various stakeholders including health professionals and government bodies. Additionally, the postholder will provide training and mentorship to junior staff, contribute to research and development activities, and may be involved in securing funding for projects. Proficiency in Welsh is desirable but not mandatory, and candidates must be prepared to work within departmental budgets and make resource allocation recommendations.
