An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experience band 5 staff nurse post in our busy children's outpatient department at The Royal London site, Barts Health NHS Trust.

The nurse-led children's outpatient department is part of a versatile and dynamic service, providing high quality holistic care with an emphasis on working in partnership with the children and their families. There are opportunities to work within highly established inter professional teams with an emphasis on working in partnership with the children and their families. Customer service is our priority!

The children's outpatient department provides clinics for a wide range of specialities both surgical and medical such as; Orthopaedic, Plastics, General Paediatrics, Endocrinology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Allergy, Cardiac, ENT etc...The post holder will therefore have every opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge, working closely with all multi-disciplinary team members.

The post holder will have excellent communication skills, be adaptable and flexible in their working. They will be keen to learn and develop new skills and knowledge through the availability of a variety of training opportunities whilst facilitating the learning needs of others.

To provide effective family centred nursing care to patients and their families. Ensure that evidence based practice is performed at all times, taking responsibility for updating own knowledge and skill in line with Trust policies and procedures and NMC code of professional conduct.

For newly qualified band 5 nurses, it will be an important step in consolidating practice and completing all relevant clinical competencies, receiving adequate support form colleagues.

1. Ensures the process of nursing is developed to meet the individual needs of each patient, providing well documented assessment, care planning and evaluation.

1. Responsible for setting, providing and maintaining high standards of clinically effective nursing care at all times.

1. Provide leadership and management to the staff team during shift ensuring effective use of human resources on the ward to ensure safe and efficient service delivery

1. Ensure that a child and family-centred approach to care is provided in outpatient areas, which takes account of childrens individual medical, psychological, emotional and social needs.

1. Identifies and receives clinical supervision in line with Trust Policy.

1. During shift, responsible for providing clinical support and guidance to junior members of staff/students and identification of opportunities for continued professional development and competencies.

1. Responsible for ensuring organisation of resources to ensure delivery of effective, competent nursing care within identified clinical area.

1. Provides technically skilled nursing care that is sensitive, relevant and responsive to the needs of the individual client in liaison with child/young person and parent/carers

1. Enable independence by teaching, supporting and encouraging children/young people and their parents/carers to participate in meeting their own care needs. Making appropriate onward referral to other paediatric teams and specialists as required.

1. Responsible for the safe co-ordination of admissions within the unit for children & young people booked for surgeries, investigations, tests or ongoing treatment, ensuring best use of available resources and in line with local policy and procedures.

1. Following period of training and evaluation undertake technically skilled clinical care as identified in line with scope for professional practice e.g. Wound dressings, HbA1c testing, sweat tests, eye dialation and assessment, immunizations.

1. Provides technically skilled clinical care and/or advice to junior team members in the planning and delivery for escort duties for children and young people requiring repatriation to local hospitals or other specialist centres.

1. In partnership with multidisciplinary team develop and contribute to pre-admission programmes for children & young people to be admitted to unit for planned procedures, treatments or elective surgery.

1. Responsible for identifying and maintaining own professional development in line with Post Registration Education and Practice

1. Practice a high standard of professional conduct in accordance with the policies, protocols and guidelines of the Trust and the NMC Scope of Professional Conduct and Standard Documents

1. Liaises effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary and multi-professional teams to ensure delivery and implementation of nursing care and effective and co-ordinated discharge planning

1. With the support of Band 6 nursing staff and Management team be partly responsible for an identified area of specialist interest and development within the childrens unit, ensuring up to date research methods are implemented in care delivery and planning.

1. In partnership with the Nurse Team Managers and band 6 staff, ensures the regular audit and evaluation of identified area of clinical practice and implementation of change management.

1. Ensures client confidentiality at all times in line with trust guidelines

1. Maintaining and accessing Electronic Patient Records and utilisation of software packages eg: outlook, word

1. Undertake role as advocate for child and family representing best interests of child or young person, in partnership with parents, at specialist meetings, in decision making etc

1. Ensure clinics are maintained and stocked to support the services.

1. Work with Housekeeper to ensure adequate stocks are ordered and available.

1. Maintaining nursing records to the Trust Standards and in accordance with the Standards for Records and Record keeping (NMC)

Professional/Managerial

1. Responsible for the management of nursing staff within the ward during a span of duty when level of experience attained.

1. To attend Team Meetings, Away Days and contribute to the development of ward polices and procedures within the childrens unit

1. Acts as an assessor to nursing students through mentorship system.

1. Responsible for 1st line management and reporting of incidents, complaints and comments from patients, carers or relatives in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

1. Is involved in the setting and maintaining of standards of care (including Health & Safety) in accordance with Trust policies.

1. Co-ordinates the care given by other professionals as appropriate within the Team .

1. Co-ordination and management of Child Protection Procedures in line with Trust policies and procedures, accessing regular supervision from Trust lead Child Protection Nurse Advisor.

1. Responsible for ongoing daily identification and management of clinical risk within the department eg infection control, risk management.

1. Undertake proactive role in development of clinically effective care.

1. Advises parents, carers and child/young person in the promotion of health and safety, prevention of illness.
