The role of Therapy Assistant Practitioner at the HWE Surgical Centre in St Albans, part of West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, involves contributing to a new, specialized facility for planned surgeries, primarily focusing on non-complex orthopaedic procedures, ENT surgeries, and spinal injections. The post holder will be responsible for managing a routine caseload of patients, aiming for timely discharges, including same-day discharge for non-complex cases. This position is part of a multidisciplinary team delivering the Orthopaedic Therapy Service seven days a week, operating within an 8am to 8pm shift pattern.

The Surgical Centre, set to open in Spring 2025, is a collaborative effort between multiple NHS trusts and is designed for high efficiency and patient care. The ideal candidate should be prepared to engage in a fast-paced environment with a clear emphasis on patient outcomes and theatre utilisation standards. Note that this position does not offer sponsorship for work permits.

We are looking NOW for talented staff to form the core team that will be the beating heart of the Hertfordshire and West Essex Surgical Centre being built at St Albans City Hospital and set to open in Spring 2025.

More than 4,000 patients will be seen at the hub each year for non-complex orthopaedic, hip and knee surgery as well as ear, nose and throat procedures and spinal injections. Being separated from emergency services will reduce the risk of short-notice cancellations.

This is a fabulous opportunity to play a key role in a flagship collaborative project between the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Herts and West Essex Integrated Care Board.

The Surgical Centre will focus on Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) standards and will be a highly efficient facility, achieving 85% theatre utilisation and operating sessions over an extended 10-hour day, four days a week, with shorter, 8-hour operating session taking place on Friday and Saturdays.

To work as part of the therapy and multidisciplinary team providing seven-day delivery of the Orthopaedic Therapy Service at the Surgical Centre based at St Albans City Hospital.

The post holder will manage their own routine caseload of patients and aim for timely discharge including same day discharge for non-complex surgical patients.

The post holder will be part of a team that work across an 8am - 8pm, 7 day shift pattern, enabling same day discharge for orthopaedic patients.
