The clinical haematology team at BHRUT invite applicants for a fixed-term locum consultant post in malignant haematology. The haematology service is delivered by a team of seven consultant haematologists, supported by eight clinical nurse specialists, four and two clinical fellows covering the day unit and supporting the registrars.
The team is based at Queen's Hospital and treats a wide range of malignant and benign conditions, including level 2B malignant haematology patients. There is also a large population of patients with red cell disorders for whom the haemoglobinopathy team provides acute and community services.
The anticoagulation service is well-established with strong leadership and extensive local protocols for managing our patients. There is a monthly haematology/obstetrics clinic.
We run a red cell apheresis service (emergency and elective). To support this service we have four haemoglobinopathy nurses covering acute services, apheresis, transition, antenatal screening and community work).
The success of the service has developed and allowed increasing aspects of the service to be nurse led. There have been further developments to improve guidance and direction in referrals from primary care.
The team is actively involved in cross specialty audit, education and protocol development with numerous opportunities to teach across directorates, to develop pathways and education in primary care.
You will provide a weekly new patient clinic, a weekly lymphoma clinic and a weekly AML/MDS clinic. You would be expected to attend the weekly malignant MDT. There is the opportunity to develop your own interest.
A commitment to attend ward patients is required. This is undertaken on a 2-week block rolling rota shared with other consultants. Full ward rounds will be undertaken twice a week when you are allocated to ward cover, with daily reviews required for new admissions and unstable patients. During weeks off ward cover, the dedicated full ward-round time will be allocated SPA time.
You will have designated time to support the laboratory, the primary care advice and guidance which are also undertaken on a rolling rota.
We have an active local interest in maintaining diagnostics expertise through in-house reporting of bone marrows and weekly morphology review meeting. If you wish, you can have the opportunity to participate in this diagnostic service, although this is not mandatory. There is a dedicated in-house haematological histopathologist. Barts Health provide the SIHMDS.
You will be expected to attend and participate in the weekly morphology meeting and core medical trainee and specialist haematology trainee teaching programme in addition to being a clinical supervisor for junior doctors. You will have the opportunity to be an educational supervisor if you wish.
You will be expected to participate in the on-call rota (overnight weekday and weekends) on a 1:6 cover.
