Communicates with patients, relatives and carers sensitive clinical information in a way that considers the level of understanding and any barriers that may have an impact on the individual receiving and understand the information, face to face and via the telephone on a frequent daily basis. Act always as an ambassador for the Ophthalmology Department for patients, their relatives, colleagues, the public and managers.
To provide and maintain a high standard of evidence based, patient centred care. To demonstrate good interpersonal skills and to develop practical skills required within the speciality, whist reflecting the philosophy of care.To deliver patient care on a daily basis, using the systems in place in the department for a multi-disciplinary approach to patient-centred care delivery, which builds on the philosophy of greater involvement of patients and their relatives/carers by using the Trusts patient and public involvement strategy.Experienced Band 5 post holders will also provide effective clinical and managerial leadership of the department, in the absence of the senior members of the team, which empowers staff to deliver patient- centred, evidence based nursing care
To assess and record visual acuity of patients.
Undertake Visual Field testing.
Undertake ocular imaging using the Ocular Coherence Tomography.
Undertake medical Ophthalmology Photography
Undertake ICARE tonometry
Undertake Ishihara test
Undertake other diagnostic tests as appropriate, including RAPD
Assist Drs removal of sutures of lid
Removal of dressings
Administration of medications.
Recording of vital signs
Pre assessment
Triage -- including GP telephone referrals, ward communication, booking patients, patient queries and medications
Record test results in the electronic patient medical notes accurately.
Make sure department is stocked up, clean and tidy areas.
Both in house and external courses at appropriate level.
Maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor in the supervision and teaching of HCA, assistant practitioners and nursing students, to develop their competence.
Support the team in collecting the patient from the ward / reception areas as required according to Theatre Policy, and escorting patients from the theatre to the ward when a procedure has been carried out.
To assist with the moving and handling of patients from bed to theatre trolleys, ensuring correct position.
Act as the patients advocate, always maintaining their dignity within a departmental team to ensure total care of the Pre, Peri and post-operative care.
Work flexibility within the department, according to competency and skills.
Instigate stocking up of designated areas of the theatre department including linen supplies, dressings, stationary etc. as required.
Support the team with the cleanliness, maintenance and tidiness of the daily working area including clinical waste and instrumentation as per policy. Reporting maintenance issues when they arise.
Whilst acting in the scrub role, demonstrate ability to anticipate and react appropriately to the requirements of the operating team utilising own judgement, training and experience
Maintaining accurate records of observation and care as requested.
Maintain theatre perioperative records to include data sheets, operating registers, and traceability systems.
Open sterile equipment and accessories and maintaining the sterile fields within scope of competency training set up of necessary machinery /equipment e.g. diathermy machines, suction, microscopes and Phaco machine.
Participate as a member of the Perioperative team carrying out safety checks of swabs, instruments and needles in accordance with national guidance & Trust policy.
To arrange the collection of specimen's liaising with the portering service as required for any portering task
Contribute to the ongoing development of clinical practice, standards of care within the service including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines, and will contribute to service developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.
