These posts are mainly to fill posts left vacant by unfilled Deanery Foundation year 1 or 2 post.. This is an in-patient post based at the Highgate West Mental Health Centre, Dartmouth Park Hill, London, N19 5NX.
Diamond Ward (Highgate West) is a 17-bed male acute treatment ward. It specialises in the treatment of patients with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, depression and personality disorder, with associated challenging behaviours/risks. The focus is in detailed clinical and risk assessment with a view to starting early effective treatment. The clinical lead for the team is Dr Kavinda Gunathillaka, Consultant Psychiatrist. The post would involves working closely with other MDT members such as nursing staff, psychiatrists, OTs and psychologists.
Tasks would include participating in daily MDT meetings and ward rounds (clinical reviews), clerking in new patients, reviewing patients' mental and physical health, ordering relevant investigations, performing physical examinations, blood tests and ECGs and participating in the out of hours core trainee rota. The foundation doctor would be working under the close supervision of Dr Gunathillaka, his specialty doctor and core trainees.
The post may be based full time in Diamond Ward or may be split between Diamond and another treatment ward in Highgate Mental Health Centre. If the post is split it will involve 3 days per week in Diamond and 2 days per week in another ward. The post has arisen because of a gap due to the post not being filled by a Deanery foundation doctor.
