Band Consultant: Depending on experience £105,504 to £139,882 per annum  PERMANENT 
Attendance at all clinical governance (audit, quality improvement, risk management) and educational activities within the Department is required.

The Department of Neurosurgery are seeking a full-time consultant spinal surgeon to strengthen the spinal trauma services at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, whilst also contributing to the general spinal services across the two sites of St. Mary's Hospital (SMH) and Charing Cross Hospital (CXH). Spinal services are integrated into the Neurosurgery Unit, which employs spinal consultants from both neurosurgical and orthopaedic disciplines.

The post is suitable for a candidate with extensive experience in spinal trauma. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the spinal on-call and acute Consultant of the Week (the latter based at St. Mary's Hospital - SMH) rotas. The role involves close working with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) including the multi-professional workforce in the allied specialties of Major Trauma, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Plastics, Pain Management and Rehabilitation Medicine, to deliver care for complex polytrauma patients, as well as isolated traumatic spinal injuries, In addition, the post holder will support the Departmental teaching and training programme, with involvement in the management of the resident doctors.

The successful candidate will use their knowledge, and leadership and management skills to deliver clinical excellence within the spinal services, working collaboratively with colleagues within, and external to the Trust. They will contribute to the effective functioning and efficient running of the Neurosurgery Department, by actively participating in the Neurosurgery Service performance, working with the multi-professional workforce. This applies specifically to the areas of clinical care and efficiency (eg. reduction in length of stay, theatre and outpatient cancellation rates etc.), quality outcomes (infection control targets, re-admission rates etc.), financial management (eg. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes), and all aspects of governance. Furthermore, they will provide clinical and training expertise in supporting, supervising, and developing members of the multi-professional workforce.

Engagement with all relevant activities within the Department is expected, to align with the clinical demands of the current NHS landscape, and the training and governance requirements of the Trust.

one full-day elective operating theatre list every week (based at CXH)

acute Consultant of the Week (based at SMH) which facilitates access to a daily (Monday to Friday) dedicated neurosurgery NCEPOD theatre list

The post holder will be expected to undertake administrative duties associated with patient care, and to contribute to the functioning of the clinical department. Attendance at complex spine and pelvic MDT, audit half day, Morbidity & Mortality, and consultant meetings is expected with engagement in all aspects of clinical governance. Finally, the post holder is anticipated to undertake regular clinical teaching for medical students, resident doctors, and the multi-professional workforce across the Trust, specifically on spinal trauma related topics. They will be encouraged to support education for hospitals elsewhere in the North West London sector, as part of the North West London Trauma Network Collaborative.
