Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) or a developmental Band 5 position for their Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments in Torquay. The ideal candidate should possess strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a focus on flexibility.
Key Requirements:
- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
- Experience in a UKAS-accredited laboratory and familiarity with quality management systems.
- The candidate must either have or be working towards the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or an equivalent qualification in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
Responsibilities include:
- Rotating through different sections of the laboratory and ensuring quality service delivery.
- Participating in out-of-hours services after sufficient training.
- Advising healthcare professionals on result validity and addressing complex queries.
- Managing work schedules to ensure efficient laboratory output.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist Band 6 (or developmental role Band 5 with uplift on completion of IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent in Haematology and Blood Transfusion), to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
We would like our new team member to have good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work flexibly. Previous experience of working in a UKAS accredited laboratory and experience of using a quality management system is required.
HCPC registered BMS and must have (or working towards) the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The department is IBMS approved for training and has UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189.
- You will participate in the laboratory rotation through all sections of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and ensure that a quality service is being provided.
- Following an appropriate period of training, the post holder will be required to participate in the out-of-hours service.
- The department is well equipped using the following platforms, Horiba Yumizen H2500/H1500, Stago STA-R max, BioFlash, Sebia Capillarys 3, Immucor NEO IRIS and CliniSys WinPath.
- The laboratory is currently in process of transitioning to Beaker/SafeTtx LIMS.

- Advise other health care professionals of the technical/analytical validity of results using knowledge and experience, and to refer complex queries on to more qualified staff
- Answer telephone enquiries regarding results and other general issue
- To understand when to refer more complex queries are referred to Senior members of staff
- Perform urgent analyses as requested by clinicians, utilising the most appropriate methods, techniques or analysers to provide results as soon as possible, and telephone results as required
- Plan own work schedules and those of BMS Band 5, BMS Trainees and MLAs, to ensure the results are issued from the laboratory efficiently
