Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine 12 month post starting 5th August 2025.

We are delighted to present this opportunity to join our growing emergency department in South Yorkshire seeing 90000 patients per year. We are a friendly district general hospital and Trauma unit caring for both adults and children. This Senior Clinical Fellow post is offered 40% non-clinical time, with the non-clinical time dedicated to developing your ultrasound skills under the guidance of our departmental ultrasound lead. There will be opportunities for supervised shop floor scanning, in order to work towards your RCEM ultrasound logbook requirements and FUSIC or FAMUS accreditation if desired. You will also have the opportunity to deliver ultrasound training to your ED colleagues, and there will be opportunities for audit or quality improvement projects in point-of-care ultrasound. If you wish to pursue a post-graduate certificate in point-of-care ultrasound, clinical supervision will be provided by our ultrasound lead, and funding can be provided for half of the course cost.

We have 17 enthusiastic consultants keen to provide shop floor teaching and long term Educational Supervision as you continue to develop. Our team of clinicians includes an F2, GPVTS, ACCS CT1s, EM HSTs, CESR Doctors and a fantastic cohort of ENPs and ACPs. We also have a Consultant dedicated to medical Education who provides bookable time for supervision and guidance.

Facilitate patient assessment, treatment and admission within the Emergency Department.

Facilitate patient discharge.

Liaison with other specialties and agencies including Primary Care within this process.

Requesting diagnostic tests such as X-Ray and laboratory investigations and taking biological samples, manually and through the Trusts computerised systems.

Act in accordance with the policies of the Emergency Department and the Trust and seek advice and assistance from the Consultants when necessary.

Ensure accurate and complete documentation is undertaken for all patient records in line with Trust protocols. This includes coding of clinical information.

Undertake consultations with relatives concerning patients when appropriate, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

When necessary accompany patients being transferred from the Emergency Department to other areas e.g. radiology department for CT or Intensive Care.

Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals in and out of the Trust e.g. specialty teams, GPs about patient care when appropriate.

About us

The Department

At present the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre UECC at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust provides a 24-hour Emergency Service to a population in excess of 255,000. The centre co-locates the Primary Care and Urgent and Emergency Care Department. The total annual attendances are approximately 127,000 a year.

Large 6 bedded resuscitation room

A 4 bedded Rapid Initial Assessment area in Majors (RAT)

20 Adult Majors cubicles in two separately areas

Streaming and Triage Rooms along with rooms to carry out investigations from triage.

Minor area with assessment & procedure cubicles, eye / ENT room, 10 large rooms housing Primary Care, Minor Injuries and rooms to see ambulatory patients for Emergency Medicine.

Self-contained Paediatric area with Paediatric assessment area, treatment room and five individual cubicles.

The Post

This post has been created to give applicants the opportunity to continue their emergency medicine training, whilst gaining additional skills in the use of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS). They will be contracted 40 hours weekly working in our friendly district General ED/trauma unit caring for both adults and children.

Up to 40% of paid time will be available to pursue and develop a special interest in ultrasound.

The appointment is to commence in August 2025 for a fixed term period of 12 months. This post can be considered as an out-of-programme experience (OOPE) or out-of programme training (OOPT) subject to you gaining approval by the appropriate deanery and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

Ultrasound

We have three state of the art machines in the department. There are opportunities to learn or develop skills under our ultrasound lead. CLINICAL DUTIES

Responsibilities:

The duties of this post are equivalent to ST4+

The successful candidate will take part in the Resident doctor rota with 80% of their time being for clinical duties.

The appointed clinical fellow will be expected to assess and manage all categories of patients presenting to the Emergency Department, under the supervision of the Emergency Department Consultants.

The post holders will be responsible to the Consultants in Emergency Medicine, in the management of all patients presenting to the department

Additional responsibilities will be in line with the role of ultrasound fellow as described above

Key Tasks

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team in order to support and help to provide a comprehensive Emergency Medicine Service within the Trust.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

Assisting with teaching, training and assessment of junior staff and medical students, nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

On-call/Full Shift duties

Hours of Work

The successful candidate will work a full shift pattern 40 hours per week, with dedicated time for pursuing their ED clinical fellow specialism.

The Tier 4 rota will be annualised and self-rostered from September 2025, under the supervision of Dr Matt Stafford (Emergency Department Rota Lead)

Break Entitlement

The rota is as a Full Shift Rota and as such Specialty Trainees can expect to be working for the whole duty period, except for natural breaks.

The definition of a natural break is at least a 30 minute continuous break after approximately four hours' continuous duty. If, for any reason, you are unable to take a natural break during any shift you are required to complete an Exception Report Form outlining the reasons why you were unable to take a break. This will facilitate the department reviewing practice, as required, to ensure you continue to work in a safe environment.

Study and Training

Each doctor has a nominated Consultant as a Clinical Supervisor who will regularly meet with them.
