The Department Support Volunteer for the NCIC Diabetic Foot Clinic at West Cumberland Hospital is responsible for welcoming outpatients and visitors, assisting them in navigating the hospital, and providing support to those attending clinics or visiting loved ones. This role is essential in alleviating the stress that can accompany hospital visits, particularly for older individuals. Key tasks include offering practical assistance and advice, escorting patients and visitors, pushing wheelchair-bound patients, and providing companionship.

Candidates should possess strong communication skills, a friendly demeanor, and the ability to physically assist patients when necessary, such as pushing wheelchairs for short distances. This is a voluntary position that requires training in wheelchair use, and applicants must meet specific criteria to ensure the safety and well-being of those they assist. A criminal records check via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is also required for this role.

More about the NHS
The National Health Service (NHS) is a cornerstone of healthcare in the United Kingdom, established in 1948 with the simple yet profound principle of providing healthcare to all citizens, free at the point of use. This revolutionary system aimed to ensure that access to medical services would not depend on an individual’s financial situation, a concept that has since become fundamental to British societal values.
