Our Ultrasound Department are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking individual to join our friendly team in this exciting role!

As a Trainee Sonographer you will aim to learn and develop a wide range of clinical and managerial skills to assist with the delivery of diagnostic procedures, diagnostic results and patient care in a specialised or general area of work. You will learn to maintain, evaluate and adapt aspects of the clinical imaging service as required.

You will learn to use acquired skills and knowledge to influence your own training and practice and that of others and to develop new and effective ways of working that improve the care of the patient and the daily running of the ultrasound department.

You will undertake and participate in research, audit and evidence-based practice. Evaluating results and disseminating them through education and teaching, using them to influence best clinical practice.

You will undertake a PGD in Medical Ultrasound at University of Cumbria, and on completion you will be eligible to apply for a band 7 Advanced Practitioner Sonographer post within the trust. All clinical training will be provided and course fees paid.

The clinical modules will be general medical, gynaecology and obstetric ultrasound.

This role will be paid as Band 7 Annex 21 over the 18 month training period.

70% year 1 - £35,.2 per annum/pro rata

75% final 6 months - £37,542 per annum/pro rata

As a Trainee Sonographer you will assist sonographers who will guide you to become competent to take on clinical responsibility and your own clinical work, examination reports and professional development. You will undertake reflective, evaluation of practice, support clinical governance and work as a part of a team with other disciplines towards shared objectives.

• Work alongside a qualified sonographer to learn the skills needed to become a competent sonographer.
• Take responsibility for the welfare and comfort of the patient whilst under the care of the radiology department, prior, during and post the ultrasound examination. Ensure that they are kept informed of any factors, such as delays, that are likely to affect them.
• Provide a high standard of ultrasound work, ensuring departmental standards and quality issues are observed.
• From the clinical information available on the referral request, determine the type of ultrasound examination required and whether any preparation prior to the examination is necessary. Contact the referring clinician for further information if required as part of the decision making process.
• Positively identify all patients prior to the examination
• As part of the clinical examination take a brief history from the patient to confirm and expand on the clinical information already available.
• Select the correct equipment, including ultrasound transducers and technique and perform the appropriate ultrasound examination to provide the diagnostic information required. Produce digital images of the examination for long term storage of the clinical record.
• Provide a written diagnostic report, of the clinical results for the referring clinician, with guidance from sonographers, and discuss these results with the patient, where appropriate.
• Ensure all urgent findings are communicated appropriately and the patient directed accordingly.
• In order to maintain accuracy of clinical records, ensure that full patient and examination data is entered onto the RIS patient management system and images are correctly stored on PACS. This includes the clinical report.
• Rotate between the Ultrasound departments at Lancashire Teaching Hospital as well as sessions undertaken at Community sites.
• Assist the radiologists with ultrasound examinations when required.
• Hours of work will be discussed at interview.
