Job summary


Weston Intensive Care Unit (WICU) have two exciting Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse positions available for an experienced Band 5 Nurse who is looking for career progression, or a current Band 6 Nurse looking for a change.



First post is Permanent, full time for 37.5 hours per week - part time hours will be considered.



Second post is a fixed-Term Maternity cover for 12 months available from 1st July 2024 at 0.92 WTE/34.5 hours per week.


Weston Intensive Care Unit (WICU) is a four bed unit with a small and very friendly team who care for a range of Level 2 and 3 patients both emergency and elective admissions.

We work closely as a multidisciplinary team to provide the best care for all patients in WICU. We have a high level of nursing autonomy in the provision and management of prescribed care and treatment goals.

WICU provides high quality care and therapies for patients with a wide variety of medical and surgical conditions during their critical care stay and beyond. We provide multi-organ support including haemofiltration, ventilation, chemical cardiac support and invasive monitoring.

We have a proactive learning environment with a dedicated Clinical Educator who will individually guide your learning in accordance with national competencies frameworks specific to Critical Care - Steps competencies. Opportunities for continued professional development are available every year. As a unit we are committed to appraisal, education and professional development.

Main duties of the job

We work closely with the Critical Care Outreach team who provide follow up reviews to ICU step down patients on the wards.
  • This role has Professional, Managerial and Personnel components.
  • Shift by shift coordination of patient flow and managing safe staffing levels for patient acuity.
  • The post holder will promote a quality service delivered by effective utilisation of resources in the day to day management and leadership of the clinical area.
  • The role carries a responsibility for the provision of high quality nursing care on the unit through efficient deployment, supervision, monitoring and education of staff during the shift.
  • The post holder will be expected to manage resources responsibly and efficiently in keeping with trust policies and to respond appropriately to a rapidly changing environment with in Critical Care nursing.
  • They will act as a resource for information pertaining to the critically ill patients within the unit and hospital. This will require him/her to be able to liaise with other clinical managers and professional heads to help ensure consistency of practice and continuity of care within the unit and trust.
  • The post holder will also be expected to act promptly on information given to her/him to ensure patient centred care in an environment where patients, visitors and staff remain safe.
  • Team leader of up to 5 staff including registered and unregistered colleagues - requiring appraisal management and supporting progression of team.
