Band 6: £42,471 to £50,364 a year pa inclusive Pro Rata  FIXED TERM

The main duties of the dental hygienist are to provide comprehensive oral care and advice including appropriate treatment for head and neck patients which will include those diagnosed with head and neck oncology prior to and after treatment, those being prepared for and undergoing radiotherapy treatment and those who are medically compromised.

The post holder will work closely and under the guidance of the Consultants and their teams in Restorative Dentistry and Oral surgery and other clinicians as deemed appropriate. They will provide treatment in line with the written prescriptions and will undertake assessments and reviews for patient and provide ongoing maintenance support and will also be expected to work autonomously and independently when managing patients under their care. They will also be expected to participate in the multidisciplinary clinics for the management of head and neck oncology patients.

The post holder will be expected to communicate in writing and verbally with referring practitioners when appropriate and necessary. They will also be expected to maintain up to date knowledge and skills pertinent to their field and also comply with the Trust governance programme by attending audit and governance meetings. On occasion the post holder will meet with external representatives from dental companies in conjunction with the consultants


Clinical

  • Provides treatment to patients including patient assessment and clinical examination including full periodontal and tooth charting as defined by scope of practice maintaining safety ensuring appropriate consent has been obtained
  • Responds to complex/demanding patient situation both clinically and administratively maintaining professionalism
  • Applies evidence based care enhancing the quality of care given to patients
  • Adopts a flexible approach to working within the multidisciplinary head and neck oncology team fostering positive relationships
  • Promotes prevention and oral health education and promotion involving others including patients
  • Deals with patient concerns and complaints effectively and sensitively keeping the consultant informed
  • Under the full range of treatment as prescribed by the referring team including the provision of oral hygiene instruction using different aides and attending wards if needed to provide advice and guidance for post-surgery oncology patients including the use of adjuncts.
