The purpose of the role of Senior Nurse Manager is to provide professional leadership and management of nursing resources across the Unscheduled Care specialties.

This will include;

  • Ensuring effective professional leadership to department managers and staff within those specialties in order to secure and assure the highest standards of clinical care;
  • Ensuring the availability of the appropriate support services;
  • Ensuring a quality service and maintaining a high standard of infection control;
  • Providing accessible and supportive presence to whom patients and their families and staff can turn for assistance, advice, support and early resolution of concerns.

The post holder will be a credible leader and posses the ability to empower and develop nurses working within the clinical environment and be accountable for professional nursing standards.

At this level the post holder is expected to work autonomously and to provide highly specialised advice to colleagues to ensure that service, quality and performance objectives are achieved. This includes supporting systems for NMC revalidation, performance management of both individuals and nursing teams in their accountability for the quality and safety of patient care.

  • Provide leadership and direction to all registered and unregistered nurses working in the delivery of Unscheduled Care specialties;
  • Direct, lead and motivate nursing and other staff working within the teams managed to ensure a high standard of professionalism, efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery, ensuring that activity is aligned to Health Board plans and strategies;
  • Act as initial focal point for all concerns arising in Unscheduled Care specialties and for professional/operational issues that arise on a daily basis and be responsible for the management of nursing staff and resources in designated teams;
  • Undertake coaching, mentoring, resource planning, standard setting, performance management and team and individual development to ensure a culture of continuous improvement and professional excellence is visible at the hospital;
  • Working with the senior colleagues to prepare bid documentation for any discretionary capital funded estate development schemes and equipment requirements;
  • Prepare clear and concise analytical reports on a wide range of complex matters frequently making cogent and rational arguments based on one's own assessment of options and providing clear recommendations as appropriate to the case;
  • Work within national / local strategy and policy and within professional guidelines, interpreting these to inform local policy development and improve practice
