Evaluate the risks associated with proceeding with individual topics and questions on social care including issues relating to completeness of the evidence base.
The Social Care Advisor, reporting to the CMO, is a senior social worker or care professional with a strong background in evidence-based practice. They will provide end to end support for guidance development bringing a social care perspective to ensure that NICE’s guidance ‘speaks’ to those working in social care and supports their decision making. They will be seen as the social care lead for NICE both by those working in other organisations and within NICE.

This is a senior leadership role and will contribute to the Directorate’s core task of horizon scanning, topic selection and prioritisation as well as supporting other functions (in addition to guidance development) where a social care perspective is needed.

The Postholder Will


  • Provide leadership on relevant social care issues within NICE
  • Assist the Chief Medical Officer and Executive Team with strategy development
  • Contribute to the review of principles of engagement, partnership agreements or similar with key national stakeholders in social care
  • Provide routine operational social care advice to NICE teams on individual topics, themes, pathways and suite of guidance within own area(s) of expertise, as required
  • Evaluate the risks associated with proceeding with individual topics and questions on social care including issues relating to completeness of the evidence base
  • Provide expert advice and contribute to the collation of evidence around guidance, both proposed and in development.
  • Provide social care advice on the need for updating guidance
  • Provide advice on the extent to which guidance from other producers might address topics/themes under consideration
  • Develop and maintain a network of key contacts and networks external to NICE to encourage engagement with guidance development and
  • Contribute to directorate and corporate priorities through participating in horizon scanning, topic selection and prioritisation of social care themes, topics and guideline questions as relevant

The purpose of the clinical directorate is to strengthen clinical and social care leadership throughout NICE and ensure end-to-end clinical oversight of, and support to, all areas of NICE activity. It also enhances the external credibility of NICE and promotes more effective stakeholder engagement.

The core task of the directorate in support of NICE’s strategic direction is to develop and deliver an organisation-wide horizon scanning, topic selection and prioritisation process that identifies and prioritises what has the greatest impact on people and the health and care system.

The directorate is also responsible for ensuring that the clinical requirements of NICE are anticipated and met in a dynamic way that is responsive to changing need.
