We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 8a Blood Transfusion Laboratory Manager within the University Hospitals Birmingham laboratories. The role will be Birmingham Heartlands site based, but will look after Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital, working closely with other laboratory managers across the UHB sites.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital & Solihull Hospital.
Applicants for the post will need to have an extensive knowledge of Blood Transfusion, laboratory and information systems, plus a developed understanding of the requirements for UKAS, MHRA and Quality Management Systems. They will need to be enthusiastic, maintain and develop high standards of quality and enjoy working as part of a team. There are many new developments taking place in Blood Transfusion including the role out of a fully automated blood fridge system and bed side administration as we all as on going IT infrastructure updates.
The post holder will liaise closely with the Head BMS and Clinical Lead, providing timely and accurate information concerning all aspects of service provision within their area.
You must be HCPC registered, possess a Degree and MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, FIBMS or Higher specialist Diploma and maintain CPD.
The post holder will have operational oversight and autonomy within Blood Transfusion at Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. They will be the lead specialist in Blood Transfusion, responsible for providing expert advice and support to service users locally, regionally and nationally. They provide professional management leadership for Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants and other Scientific and Technical/Support staff over a wide range of specialised diagnostic techniques required to deliver a fit for purpose clinical laboratory service. They will liaise closely with the Head Biomedical Scientist and Clinical Service Lead, providing timely and accurate information concerning all aspects of service provision within their area.
This remit includes ensuring; the technical and scientific robustness of analytical equipment and techniques, system trouble shooting and maintenance of turnaround times, the continued competency of staff to undertake these complex analyses, interpreting laboratory results and providing appropriate advise, the maintenance and review of internal and external quality assurance and compliance with national quality standards e.g. ISO 15189, and also maintenance of our MHRA licence, the efficient use of financial, material and human resources and ensuring there are adequate numbers of motivated and trained staff to maintain a 24hr service requiring the monitoring of work practices and absences.
