Job Overview


We are looking to appoint a Junior Sister or Charge Nurse to work alongside our dynamic stroke team . The successful candidate will need strong interpersonal skills, a keen interest in caring for patients with different types of stroke, work towards promoting independence and confidence to support patients on the rehabilitation pathway. The candidate should have initiative to be the patient's advocate and be confident to challenge decisions in a professional manner, providing patient-centred care.

Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as you will be leading liaison with patients and their relatives.

The candidate should be a registered nurse, and with experience in providing post-stroke care to patients of different ages, with varying degrees of stroke severity, as well as supporting families and relatives of the patients . Previous experience of working within a medical area is essential.

Main duties of the job

As a sister, the successful candidate will be expected to take charge of the shift and work closely with the Ward manager, medical staff , therapy teams, psychiatric teams and discharge team to plan and manage patient care and discharge planning. Our group of patients are particularly vulnerable due to the impact of stroke upon their lives, and therefore the department works closely with the safeguarding team to ensure the safety of vulnerable patients on discharge, escalating any concerns in a timely manner to allow appropriate measures to be put in place. The candidate will be expected to play an active role in facilitating this process.

The successful candidate will work with the multidisciplinary team , including the speech and language therapist, dietician, nutrition team, physiotherapists , occupational therapists, medical team, discharge team and community services, including the Early Supported Discharge team who specifically support stroke patients on discharge, to enable a safe and timely discharge back into the community with follow-up support if deemed necessary. As the majority of our stroke patients are repatriated from other hospitals, the successful candidate will be expected to liaise directly with the referring hospitals and site capacity team to facilitate a quick and smooth repatriation of the referred patient in a timely manner.
