This apprenticeship gives you the chance to gain hands-on experience at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust while studying at Wakefield College. We welcome applicants with no previous care experience, and we'll support you throughout your apprenticeship. We provide a comprehensive training programme, starting with the Care Certificate, and an induction in our award-winning healthcare academy.

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you'll need GCSEs in English and Maths at grades 4-9 (A-C) or Functional Skills Level 2, and must not have previously started an apprenticeship in the same field. You must also be aged 16+ and have been a resident in the UK/EU for the last three years.

Please also note that this role is not on the Home Office list of occupations eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.

The role is a key part of the nursing team, offering compassionate care to patients, carers, and relatives at the Trust.

You will work under the direction of a qualified member of staff to ensure the safe and skilled delivery of a range of clinical tasks.

You will need to maintain a professional appearance at all times and build positive, respectful relationships with staff, patients, and families.

You will protect the privacy, dignity, and confidentiality of individuals, ensuring that equality and diversity are respected in everything you do.

During your apprenticeship, you will learn the necessary theory and skills to undertake a range of core clinical skills, including but not limited to:

  • Venepuncture, blood pressure, cannula removal, heart rate monitoring, temperature, swabbing, samples such as urine dip, wound care and simple dressing, pregnancy tests, and catheter removal and insertion.

As an apprentice clinical support worker you will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, however you will be given dedicated study time in order to complete the apprenticeship.

Understanding your role

  • Working under the direction of a registrant, participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care, within the boundaries of your role which may include chaperoning of patients, escorting/ transferring of patients and providing 1-1 or group enhanced care
  • Demonstrates own duties/ role to new starters
  • Frequent exposure to emotional/distressing events, e.g. breaking of bad news
  • Assist in the care of patients at end of life and after death
  • Orders supplies under the direction of the nurse in charge
  • Participate in patient and public involvement activities
  • Participate in general cleanliness and tidiness of the environment
  • Undertake mandatory training and role specific training relevant to role
  • Prioritises own work load

Person centred care

  • Exchange factual information with patients using a variety of methods to help patients understanding
  • Undertake personal care duties e.g., bathing, toileting, dressing, support with meals and assisting patients with their personal hygiene appearance
  • Act as patient advocate at all times

Communication

  • Involve patients and carers/relatives in delivery of patient care and provide assurance and support when required
  • Identify concerns regarding the patients health, safety and wellbeing while undertaking personal care and discuss with the nurse in charge

Handling information

  • Participate in the maintenance of accurate records of care both written and verbal
  • Accurately record height, weight age, fluid, nutrition intake and output, bowel movements (this list is not an exhaustive list and other documentation may be expected as part of the role). This may be written documentation or entry within electronic systems

Developing yourself

  • Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development of others
  • To undertake in-service training relevant to the post
  • Attend mandatory in-service training programmes
  • Maintain up to date skills and knowledge

Duty of care

  • Report to Manager/Nurse in charge all untoward occurrences, comments and complaints from patients and visitors
  • To report any accident, untoward incident or loss relating to staff, patients or visitors according to Trust policies.
  • Report any incidents, complaints or accidents to the Nurse in charge
  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources
