Substantive Consultant in Gastroenterology post at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital (LU4 0DZ). This full‑time, permanent consultant role (10 PAs) sits within a team of gastroenterologists and hepatologists and offers the chance to strengthen hepatology provision, with cross‑site working or change of base as service needs evolve. Both endoscopy units are JAG‑accredited and the service provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic lists (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, nasal endoscopy, ERCP and general anaesthesia lists), a 24‑hour GI bleed rota with weekend endoscopy, plus colon capsule, Cytosponge (Bedford) and small bowel capsule (Luton). The post offers a competitive salary band (£109,725–£145,478) and a realistic opportunity to shape local services while delivering high‑quality patient care to a population of around 700,000 across Bedfordshire.

The role involves delivering high‑quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy, managing gastroenterology in‑patients, running an outpatient service and overseeing JAG and surveillance pathways. You will participate in weekly MDT and governance meetings, contribute to service development, education and audit, act as joint clinical supervisor for trainees and help translate research and audit into practice. Applicants should have UK CCT (or be within six months), entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Medicine and Gastroenterology, MRCP, JAG accreditation (or equivalence) and be able to meet on‑call residence requirements; appointments are subject to Occupational Health and DBS checks. This is an excellent post for clinicians who value hands‑on patient work combined with teaching and leadership in a collegial, family‑minded environment — particularly suitable for women clinicians and carers seeking meaningful clinical leadership alongside clear support for training and development.
