Consultant in HMDS at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, based at St James's University Hospital (Leeds LS9 7TF), is a permanent 8 PA consultant appointment within the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service. HMDS is one of the largest specialist haematopathology laboratories in Europe, serving a population of around six million and handling more than 40,000 specimens a year. You will join an experienced, multidisciplinary team of consultants and clinical scientists and have access to advanced facilities — flow cytometry, comprehensive molecular diagnostics including next‑generation sequencing, immunohistology and informatics. The role centres on final reporting of bone marrow, peripheral blood and lymph node biopsies, giving specialist diagnostic advice, supporting regional multi‑disciplinary teams, developing a complementary area of diagnostic expertise and taking part in the service’s active research and development programme; laboratory on‑call only, with no inpatient on‑call expected. Part‑time, flexible working and job‑share arrangements are welcome, and the clinical element of the post is negotiable depending on your background and interests.

This post is suitable for applicants with FRCPath (or equivalent) who are on the GMC Specialist Register, or for UK trainees within six months of CCT at interview; candidates may come from either a haematology or histopathology background with higher subspecialty training in haematopathology. A strong record in research, teaching and audit is essential; the appointment includes an Honorary Senior Lecturer title and opportunities to develop personal research and clinical interests. Salary is £109,725–£145,478 pa, the closing date is 16 October 2025 and interviews are scheduled for 18 November 2025. DBS checks will be required and skilled worker sponsorship can be considered.
