Job Summary

If you would like to perform varied and valued work as a Graduate Psychologist in a post this could be the job for you. The vacancy is within the Human Factors Group which is a small multi-disciplinary team providing the Royal Navy and wider Ministry of Defence (MOD) with applied research and evidence-based consultancy in psychology and ergonomics. Recent Human Factors psychology projects include stress management in the workplace, subject matter expert support to accident investigations, fatigue management, health surveillance and safety measurement. The post would suit someone with an interest and experience in occupational psychology, health psychology, applied research or human factors. In particular those with interest and experience in cognitive measures of performance, psychophysiology, memory and cognition, and safety culture. Experience could have been gained as part of a degree qualification.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

Specific tasks may include but are not limited to:

• Sourcing and critically reviewing relevant literature to provide subject matter expertise in areas such as fatigue, stress, decision making, attention, memory, and research design.
• Creating and administering surveys to collect data on topics such as working conditions, risk of stress, and safety behaviour.
• Analysing quantitative and qualitative data using Excel, SPSS and NVivo (training in these software packages will be available).
• Facilitating focus groups, delivering workshops, and conducting interviews.
• Writing research reports, academic papers, and letters for customers.
• Helping to design innovative research and prepare protocols for scientific and ethical review.
  
  

Depending on the needs of the task, the post holder will at times work independently and at other times collaboratively with team members or colleagues in other departments. The post holder will be required to engage with customers and stakeholders at all levels, including senior military and civilian personnel. The post requires occasional travel within the UK and sometimes overseas, each of which may include overnight stays on land and possibly at sea.

Person specification

It is essential that you have, or achieve this academic year, an undergraduate honours degree in psychology (2:1 minimum), accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

There is no fixed start date for the post, but the successful candidate will be expected to take up post as soon as possible following the completion of pre-employment checks and security vetting.

The successful candidate must have a thorough and accurate approach to work with good attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and an ability to meet deadlines.
