Help keep Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ grounds safe, welcoming and beautiful for patients, visitors and staff as a Grounds & Gardens Operative (XN03) within the Estates External Environment Team. Based primarily at St James’s University Hospital but working across Trust sites as part of a small mobile team, you’ll carry out hands-on horticulture and landscaping — turf and flower-bed care, shrub and tree maintenance, weed control and propagation, paving, decking and walling, gully and drain maintenance, plus minor road and footpath repairs. The role is full-time (37.5 hours, Monday–Friday, 7.5-hour days) and includes a 22-week winter on‑call rota for gritting and snow clearance (November–March); it’s physically demanding in all weathers and requires safe use of machinery (tractors, ride-on mowers, chainsaws, strimmers) and a full, current British driving licence, with a DBS check required.

This opportunity is ideal for horticulturally qualified operatives (NVQ Level 2, recognised apprenticeship and significant post-apprenticeship experience) who want practical, meaningful work in a supportive environment — training and development are available and additional licences (PA, chainsaw, tractor) are desirable. The post is Band 3 (£24,937–£26,598 pa pro rata, including unsocial-hours enhancements) with 27–33 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, a contributory pension, on-site childcare, salary sacrifice schemes (cycle to work) and flexible working options.
