Health Care Assistant
Salary £22,992 (36 hrs) £23,950 (37.5hrs)

We provide specialist care for people who have a life limiting illness in our 14-bedroom ward, located in Pontefract just minutes from Junction 32 of M62. We also offer outreach services and run a successful Lymphoedema clinic for patients.
We currently have a vacancy for a Health Care Assistant to join our team. As a Health Care Assistant within the Hospice you will assist in delivering basic care and other patient related clinical activities under the supervision or as directed by a Registered Nurse. You will also provide support to carers and colleagues within the clinical environment. The holistic support we offer to our patients is tailored to meet their medical, social, spiritual and emotional needs.

To be considered for this role you must have an NVQ level 2 in a care related subject, or equivalent i.e. Care Certificate and end of life care experience. An NVQ Level 3 is desirable.
Main duties of the job
Main purpose of job: To deliver a range of patient care duties under the supervision of registered nurses providing basic patient care and providing physical, psychological and spiritual needs to people with life limiting illnesses.
Responsibilities:
Overall Duties:
Maintain a high standard of patient care ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to;
Give individualised patient care under the direction and supervision of the registered nursing staff;
Assist in admitting patients to the ward, completing demographic details and recording base-line observations;
Develop skills in caring for terminally ill patients and their families;
Support registered nurses in their role and work as a member of the nursing team;
Cover a 24 hour nursing rota;
Participate in implementing care delegated by registered staff for which training has been given and competence achieved;
Recognise abnormal recordings or signs of change in a patient’s condition and report changes to a registered nurse;
Assess patients’ level of dependence in meeting personal care needs and give appropriate assistance (includes hygiene, mobility, nutrition, elimination and comfort);
Assist patients to eat and drink in a sensitive and supportive manner;
Ensure accurate and timely records of care (electronic and paper) are maintained, upholding information governance;
Be involved in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care together with other professionals;
Work as a member of the nursing team under the supervision of registered staff reporting changes in patients conditions and needs as they occur;
Participate in meetings related to families and staff where required;
Maintain a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, their families, visitors and staff. Reporting incidents to the nurse in charge;
Be fully aware and comply with all The Prince of Wales Hospice policies and procedures;
Communicate information on patient care and related matters to the nurse in charge;
Ensure correct use and due economy is made of equipment and resources; and
Participate in the induction of new staff and students.
