Job description
Work as a Healthcare Science Support Worker (Biomedical Support Worker) within Cellular Pathology at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, based at Southampton General Hospital (SO16). You will support diagnostic services by processing a wide range of specimens, maintaining consumables and reagents, entering accurate data on Trust and departmental systems, and liaising across pathology teams. The laboratory handles around 51,000 samples a year and includes neuropathology, paediatric pathology, immunohistochemistry, cytology, biomedical imaging, electron microscopy and mortuary services — your role helps deliver timely, accurate diagnoses that matter to patients and families. This permanent role is Agenda for Change Band 2 with a salary of £24,465 per annum (pro rata), and is available full-time or part-time.
This role suits practical, attentive people — especially women carers looking for meaningful work with flexible working options. You’ll need GCSEs (A–C) in at least two of Maths, English or Science, good keyboard skills, attention to detail and manual dexterity; previous lab or NHS experience and IT/NVQ qualifications are desirable. The service runs 6am–7pm Monday–Friday with a rotational Saturday shift (about one in five) and occasional Bank Holiday cover; a DBS check is required and sponsorship applications will be considered. University Hospital Southampton offers inclusive training and development, flexible working where possible, and the chance to make a real difference close to home on the south coast.
