When people talk about the Flying Doctor, thoughts generally turn to red-bellied planes undertaking rescue missions in the Outback. Our history, however, is heavily based in Victoria with four of the major founding figures hailing from remote and rural communities across the state. Furthermore, the first ratified Section of RFDS was Victoria, after a formal constitution was signed at Melbourne Town Hall in 1934.
The current Victorian story is one that reflects today challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state, yet remains faithful to the original philosophy of “connecting people with care”.
While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by delivering a range of primary health services.
These services address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.

About The Role:
First Aid Responders contribute to the Royal Flying Doctor Victoria – First Aid Services and provide first aid services at organised events that are appropriate to scope of practice, clinical practice protocol, and licensing. These roles are a fabulous opportunity to interact with, and support the community in a range of settings that generate varied and interesting first aid service requirements. You will be supported through training, supervision and clinical practice to deliver high quality basic first aid treatment to members of the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates professionalism through punctuality, reliability and presentation of self, vehicle and equipment.
- Without exception, demonstrate and promote safe work practices and contribute to improvement processes.
- Confidently and appropriately interact and communicate with patients, public, and event organisers, including where people are exhibiting challenging behaviour.
- Identify and respond to the needs of patients, event coordinators and emergency services in a timely fashion.
- Is competent in use of communication devices and able to receive, respond to and report alerts and requests for assistance.
- Assist and provide first aid in accordance with individual scope of practice, and demonstrate competency in identifying when a patient is out of scope.
- Contribute to decisions, actions, and outcomes, including appropriate and timely escalation where a patient is identified as out of scope and activity documentation and reporting.
- Willingness to develop and maintain knowledge of FAS policy and procedures, attend induction, annual competency training and complete other training and updates as necessary.
Responder Level 1
Current Qualifications Include:
- HLTAID 009 (CPR) or;
- HLTAID Basic Emergency Life Support) or;
- HLTAIDProvide First Aid) and;
- 22300VIC (anaphylaxis) OR equivalent
Current Qualifications Include:
- HLTAID provide emergency first aid in education care setting) or;
- HLTAID provide first aid in remote or isolated site) or;
- HLTAID provide advanced first aid) or;
- HLT 31120 (CERT 3 nonemergency transport) or;
- HLTSS 00068 (Occupational first aid skillset) and;
- 22578VIC (anaphylaxis) or equivalent and;
- PUAEME005 Provide pain management or equivalent
Current Qualifications Include:
- Certificate IV in Health care (HLT41120) or;
- Diploma of Emergency Health Care (HLT51020) or;
- Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) or equivalent.
