Job summary

The post holder will carry out the assessment, planning and provision of specialist ophthalmic nursing care to patients within the vitreo retinal emergency unit (VRE) and out-patient setting.

The post holder will act as a co-ordinator in the outpatient clinics and Vitreo Retinal Emergency unit ensuring vitreo retinal patients are seen and assessed by all members of the multidisciplinary team.

They will oversee the smooth flow of patients through the clinic and ensure no unnecessary delays in both the VRE and out-patient settings.

Main duties of the job

Develop an integrated nursing role surrounding the management of vitreo-retinal ophthalmology patients and their families.

Attend and contribute to departmental meetings, internal and external ophthalmology, and vitreo-retinal related focus groups.

Responsible for assessing the care needs of the patient group, through clinical assessment, whilst also considering psychological and sociological aspects of need.

Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of care given, implementing changes to ensure high standards of appropriate nursing care.

Create and promote a partnership approach between the patient, carers and all professionals involved in their care (including outside agencies).

Provide leadership and supervision, surrounding vitreo-retinal care, to less experienced to less experienced staff working across the Vitreo Retinal Emergency and outpatient departments.

To be involved in carrying out nursing extended roles, such as providing informed consent for patients undergoing vitreo retinal surgery and investigations, performing telephone consultations for post operative patients, and supporting the delivery of technician led synchronous and asynchronous clinics in line with the vitreo retinal service's future plans for delivery care
