Work with the Director of Services Strategy on the development and delivery of clinical services, working with and through the lead clinicians, the Executive Group, the Chief Executive and Trustees.

The post holder will work together with the CEO and other Executives. They have full responsibility for ensuring the high quality of patient services is maintained to plan and deliver the operational elements of the charitys services strategy across all aspects of clinical delivery.

The Director of Clinical Services will demonstrate expert leadership and practice, facilitating a positive working environment with an emphasis on team working and has responsibility for:

  • the provision of strong professional leadership across the clinical services, demonstrating compassion, diversity and respect for patients, carers, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders
  • ensuring the Hospice provides a clinical service that meets the highest standards expected of a modern healthcare provider
  • creating and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring all appropriate governance processes are maintained
  • ensuring that all clinical services comply with all regulatory and legislative standards.
  • developing relationships and partnerships with external services and stakeholders
  • championing change and transformation


Scope and Limits of Authority

  • makes day to day decisions to ensure effective operation of clinical services
  • works collaboratively and consultatively with colleagues, internal and external.
  • contributes to strategic planning, being a member of the Executive Team.
  • contributes to and manages the budget of for clinical services.
  • works with the CEO and the Director of Finance and Operations to negotiate with outside bodies eg Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), End of Life Care Groups and services, acute hospital services and community services.
  • acts as the Registered Manager for the Hospice
  • Safeguarding lead

Main Duties


1 Management and Development of Clinical Services

  • Provide strong leadership for nursing, therapy, and family support staff to maintain high standards of care.
  • Offer professional advice to the Chief Executive, Trustees and advise them on National relevant health policy and development.
  • Work with the Director of Services Strategy on the development and delivery of clinical services, working with and through the lead clinicians, the Executive Group, the Chief Executive and Trustees

Deliver clinical operations that embrace the changing environment in hospice care that is pioneering and innovative.

Provide professional leadership within the clinical team, to ensure clinical staff maintain a high standard of clinical care and ensure patient satisfaction with the service provided.

As the Registered Person to ensure that the Essential Standards for Quality and Safety are continuously and consistently met.

Work with the clinical team to develop, review, and manage all policies, procedures and competencies for the nursing, therapy and volunteer services within the organisation via the clinical network system.

Provide a safe environment and effective and efficient management through the application of relevant legislation to nursing, therapy and bereavement practice and a thorough Clinical Governance system.

Promote a learning environment, embracing and disseminating clinical research findings for all nursing, therapy, bereavement staff and volunteers to ensure that care is up to date, and evidence based.

Work with the Director of Finance and Operations to procure and ensure the safety of clinical equipment and supplies within a specified budget.

Accountable Officer for the safe management of Controlled Drugs

Lead for Safeguarding of Children and Adults, including Deprivation of Liberty (Safeguarding)

Holds responsibility for ensuring plans are implemented to prevent avoidable healthcare associated infections at all levels of the organisation. Responsible for infection control at all delivery sites.


2. Communication

Develop and support good communication across the charity.

Represent the charity externally, promoting public confidence and reputation.

Work with the Director of Fundraising to support awareness and fundraising including the development of cases for support, funding propositions and case studies.

Develop and maintain good relations with all stakeholders commissioners, other service providers and voluntary agencies including the CCG, Macmillan, neighbouring hospices, nursing homes and GP practices.

Liaise with external professional services for patients across the organisation.

Provide an effective communication network within the multidisciplinary team.


3. Management

  • Develop strong recruitment and retention schemes for nursing, therapy, bereavement, and volunteer staff working with patients.
  • Ensure that all nursing staff are registered with the NMC and therapy staff with their professional bodies and that all staff are Criminal Records Bureau checked prior to working in the organisation.
  • Plan and prepare agendas and papers for all Clinical Governance Subcommittee meetings.
  • Manage and update the Clinical Governance Risk Register
  • Responsible for ensuring there is a system of clinical supervision and appraisal for all nursing, therapy, bereavement staff and volunteers

Financial Management


Prepare the clinical budgets with the support of the Finance team.

Actively engage in financial planning

Provide reports and briefings for the charity, CCG contract reporting and other stakeholder reports.

Continually work towards maximising efficiency and effectiveness in use of budgets to provide high quality clinical services and value for money.

Be accountable for budgets within own areas of responsibility, working with line managers to ensure their understanding and contribution to budgetary management.

Heading up the Clinical Services team both in the hospice and remotely, you will act as the Registered Manager and will ensure our high quality patient services are maintained, managed, and developed.

You will work with the Senior Management Team to plan and deliver the operational elements of the charitys services strategy across all aspects of clinical delivery. You will provide expert clinical leadership and practice which meets the highest standards expected, facilitating a positive working environment and a culture of continuous improvement and will be accountable for compliance and governance for our clinical services. You will contribute to and manage the clinical services budget.

As Director of Clinical Services, you will be key to developing our strategic plan, listening to what matters to our patients, identifying gaps in care and shaping services for the future. Delivering new innovative support that meets a clear need and directing our existing services. Building strong and supportive relationships with other care providers, partners and external stakeholders is important while enhancing patient and carer experiences.

If you have a minimum of 10 years experience with relevant clinical qualifications and knowledge of end of life care, we would love to hear from you. Knowledge of CQC regulations and the principles of clinical governance and NHS policy development would be an advantage.

Your integrity and compassion will be coupled with energy and creativity to embody a collaborative and consultative approach and you will demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills.
