What You Will Do


The renal unit has an exciting opportunities for a Health care assistant to join our team on a permanent contract. The posts will be prominently based in the renal unit in the University hospital Crosshouse however you may be asked to work in the satellite renal unit in the University hospital Ayr. The shifts will consist of day and nightshifts in Crosshouse Hospital and day shifts in Ayr Hospital.

You requires to have SVQ 2 qualifications or equivalent health care certificate and has relevant experience working as an auxiliary nurse in the renal unit.

As a nursing auxiliary you will be involved in the preparation of the patient, the dialysis machine and the environment in order for the registered nurse to deliver the patients dialysis therapy. Moving and handling will be a large part of the role as well as recording physiological measurements, weights and working with needles and blood products.

You will be involved in ordering, storing and preparing stock required for the renal unit so good computer skills are essential.

Knowledge, Training And/or Experience Required To Do The Job


You must possess good interpersonal and communication skill and be committed to learning and development as there is a comprehensive training package involving research and practical applications and further development opportunities with gaining SVQ 2 & 3 qualifications and completing learnpro modules. It is essential that the qualifications are achieved at level 2 and 3 in order to maintain the post holder at a band 3.

From 1 April 2024, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change workers in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37.5 to 37 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.



NHS Ayrshire and Arran will implement this change but it may not be possible to fully transition from 1 April and there may therefore be some areas of the organisation where implementation may take longer. If the department is currently unable to safely accommodate the reduced hours from 1st April, you may be required to work 37.5 hours per week (pro rata for part-time staff) until the department can meet the requirements without impacting patient safety - you will, of course, be remunerated accordingly. NHS Ayrshire and Arran is committed to full implementation of the 37 hour working week across all areas as soon as it is safe to do so
