The Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Youth Worker for its Complications of Excess Weight Service (CEW) based at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. This role will focus on supporting children and young people aged 11-25 who are facing challenges related to unhealthy weight. The Youth Service at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is based at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH). NHS England recently commissioned several regional centres throughout England to develop a national service to provide specialised treatment to Children and Young People with Complications from Excess Weight (CEW).
In the Northwest of England, we have developed a twin hub and spoke model for running these services. The Manchester hub will be based at RMCH, with a twin hub located at Alderhey Children’s Hospital forming a unique partnership flagship service for children and young people who are at the most severe end of the spectrum of unhealthy overweight. An enhanced spoke will be located at Royal Preston Hospital thus covering the population from Lancashire and South Cumbria, Cheshire and Mersey side and Greater Manchester.
RMCH are therefore looking to recruit a Youth Worker to join our new and exciting service. This post involves working within healthcare and community based settings, and linking in with families, school health, local healthcare partners, primary care and social care.
The Youth Worker will be supporting young people with a focus on the young person's social and well-being needs whilst they are cared for as in-patients, out-patients and within the wider community.
The Youth Worker will work alongside and in collaboration with the young person’s multi-disciplinary team members such as specialist nurse, dietician, physiotherapist and clinical psychologist. Youth worker will plan and deliver training to staff in hospital and community settings. They will also provide holistic advice and care to the young person with particular emphasis on linking into community based services and facilities to help deliver healthy living possibilities closer to home.
The Youth Worker will deliver this work through one to one, group work, peer support and youth work sessions within either the children’s services, MFT community and hospital settings.
The role requires a Youth Work Diploma or equivalent in youth work, psychology, or social sciences (Dip HE/JNC ) with a minimum of two years’ experience, working with young people aged 11- 25 years in an hospital/ healthcare setting. Crucially, you must be self-motivated, can use your own initiative and be responsive to the needs of the young person in a health setting.
