Job Summary
This new position within the Health Board reflects the organisation's continued drive to locate appropriate specialist dental services closer to our communities, and to integrate services to improve patient care and access.
The successful candidate will provide support and guidance to the primary care team and existing clinical leads on the development and delivery of integrated, secondary care, community, and primary care specialist dental services. The role will also involve deputising for the Dental Director when appropriate as well as a service wide role in Quality and Safety and/or professional performance and development.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is a key member of the PCTG Management Team, providing professional medical/dental advice, leadership, and support to ensure that the highest standard of clinical care is delivered within the Group and where specialist dental services interface with other Health Board Groups.
The post holder provides leadership and direction for specialist dental services for the Group programmes to remodel care pathways to achieve better outcomes for patients and service users, with a focus on delivering care and support as close to home as possible, and making best use of specialist resources and hospital facilities.
The post holder provides clinical leadership to medical/dental staff across the Health Board promoting personal, professional and service development, building effective working partnerships with individuals and organisations in the local health and social care community.
The post holder supports the development and delivery of effective clinical governance systems for specialist dental services in line with SBUHB frameworks and policies.
The post holder will advise on effective specialist dental workforce planning across the Group in order to provide the appropriate level and mix of skilled individuals to address the health needs of the community both now and in the future.
About Us
Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.
Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings.
We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals.
The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.

Education/Qualifications Essential
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Full registration with GDC
- Registered as a dental specialist with the GDC
- Evidence of further development - education and/or training
Desirable
- Masters level qualification or evidence of training and experience to that level
- Health service management/ leadership qualification
- Postgraduate qualification from a Medical Royal College/Faculty
Experience and Knowledge Essential
- Significant track record of employment at a senior level in a health related environment
- Well established dental practitioner with considerable dental experience of working in the specialist dental arena since their full registration with the GDC
- Experience of dental management
- Considerable experience in clinical leadership roles
- Experience of working effectively with other stakeholders to improve primary community and secondary care services at a strategic and operational level
- Track record of facilitating change to improve services in clinical practice
- Evidence of leading service change with professional colleagues
- Sound knowledge of clinical governance and effective systems of medical management such as job planning, appraisal and clinical assessment
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and its application across health services
- Understanding of medical/dental recruitment and training matters
- Demonstrable experience of working positively with senior clinicians to achieve improvement to services
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of the strategic issues facing NHS Wales

- Exposure to working at Board level
