Job description
The Consultant midwife will demonstrate strong leadership and lead on strategic initiatives to promote and facilitate childbirth in all clinical settings. As an expert midwife they will have extensive theoretical and practical knowledge. With extensive experience of clinical skills needed to promote midwifery in a modern maternity setting. The role will be to lead and support midwives to realise their full potential as autonomous practitioners placing women, pregnant people and their families at the centre of care planning. The post holder will work closely with the Director of Midwifery and the midwifery senior management team to develop a Maternity service which is responsive to the needs of women, pregnant people and staff. The consultant midwife will support with the strategic direction of the services Public health portfolio and ensure clinical excellence and research drive changes within the public health setting which are relevant for our population.
A key component of this post is to ensure that the service users experience is of the highest quality, inspiring public confidence. The Consultant midwife will ensure that all women and pregnant people are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond. This will be achieved by high clinical visibility, accessibility, and surveillance.
Our main hospital site, Croydon University Hospital is one of the busiest in London. We’re also leading the way in providing more healthcare outside hospitals at clinics, specialist centres and in people’s homes. Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after people of all ages across Croydon.

- Provide a role model for midwives by practising skills of the highest order, whilst exercising a high degree of personal and professional autonomy.
- Provide colleagues women and birthing people with a high level of specialist knowledge and highly developed practical skills.
- Develop and maintain evidence based guidelines for holistic pregnancy practice.
- Develop strategies to ensure women and pregnant people with complex needs benefit fully from a multidisciplinary approach to their care.
- Be prepared to make decisions about practice where precedents do not exist and where appropriate, without recourse to others based on sound clinical evidence.
- Provide emotional support in difficult and or distressing circumstances
- Able to convey unwelcome news to staff and women when appropriate.
- Advice and support to colleagues when standard protocols do not apply or exist.
- Lead the development of staff to become confident in decision making through empowerment, support and evidence based knowledge.
