The role of Medical Examiner at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London involves the independent review of all non-coronial deaths to ensure accurate death certification and support bereaved families during difficult times. Medical Examiners (MEs) are senior, independent doctors trained to scrutinize medical records, communicate with attending practitioners, and engage with the next of kin to provide transparent explanations regarding the cause of death. This role is part of the NHS's initiative following legislative changes in 2024 that mandate such reviews.

MEs are required to adhere to legal and procedural standards, maintain detailed records, and assist in training junior doctors regarding death certification. They work collaboratively with a team of Medical Examiners and Officers, reporting to the Trust Lead Medical Examiner and other senior figures within the organisation. The positions are part-time, allowing flexibility while ensuring essential services are available, including support during weekends and bank holidays for urgent review needs.
