To be an active member of the team within Blood Sciences, working with biomedical scientists, medical staff , Associate Practitioners and other biomedical assistants (BMA) in a flexible manner to support the function of the process. It is assumed that a person employed at level 2 is competent in tasks associated with the level one role. Also the tasks undertaken by a BMA grade 2 involve a higher level of complexity and a requirement for more knowledge, understanding and for using initiative to prioritise the work. This role is 24/7 and can include weekends and night working.

Stock control: Assist in the dayto-day stocks of consumables. Document Archiving: Be involved in the electronic archiving of laboratory documentation to meet accreditation requirements. Test Knowledge: Demonstrates an understanding of the sample requirements for the tests performed within the Fast Track Laboratory as well as a basic understanding of sample requirements and procedures carried out in other laboratories within pathology. Sample Preparation and Analysis: Be involved in the preparation of samples prior to analysis and organise the day-to-day arrangements for sample storage and disposal. Assist in analyses on automated analysers according to standard operating procedures. Malfunctions: Identify malfunctions, errors or problems and deal with them according to procedures. Ability to identify basic errors and deal with them according to standard operating procedures using initiative where required. Organisation: Must maintain flexibility and may be required to cover BMA duties in different areas of the laboratory, at short notice. Works with the team leader and BMSs to organise day to day staff allocation ensuring departmental procedures are followed and to ensure the smooth running of the department. Order entry: Book-in laboratory requests into the laboratory computer ensuring the appropriate laboratory tests and examinations are performed on the correct patients specimens and the resultant report is sent to the correct requesting source. Supervisory & Training: Participate in the training of new biomedical assistants and associate practitioners. Supervise biomedical assistants and less experienced staff, allocating work, training, etc. Laboratory Basic laboratory work Perform other technical duties as required within post-holders training and competence. To perform any other duties required by the Laboratory Manager or Head of Department commensurate with grade. Training relevant to this post, including safety aspects in the handling of biological material, will be given.
