Band 3: £24,071 to £25,674 a year pro rata, per annum  FIXEDTERM 

The Respiratory Physiology Department at North Bristol NHS Trust is looking to recruit an enthusiastic Assistant Respiratory Physiologist. We are a busy department providing a wide range of respiratory investigations for a range of patients.

The successful candidate will have a positive can-do attitude and be able to thrive in a busy but often challenging environment. They will have a friendly approach to dealing with our patients and visitors to the department. The post holder should be able to show a high level of professionalism whilst providing a consistently high-quality service to patients, staff and users of the Respiratory Physiology Department.

As an Assistant Respiratory Physiologist at North Bristol NHS Trust you will work with other members of the Respiratory Physiology team to deliver high quality diagnostic investigations to a wide range of patients.

  • You will assist in routine equipment quality control, cleaning and maintenance and stock control to help ensure that all equipment is in full working order and ready for use.
  • You will perform spirometry, exhaled nitric oxide measurements, six-minute walk tests and overnight oximetry independently following a period of training and certification.
  • You will provide support to the Respiratory Physiologists in planning and preparing patients for other more complex investigations.

Knowledge, Training and Experience

GCSE (or equivalent) Maths, English & Science Grade C/4 or above.

Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Qualification

Experience of performing physiological investigations.

Experience of working in a healthcare environment in a patient facing role.

To participate in the following activities, under supervision where appropriate.

Clinical

Undertake the following investigations independently; Spirometry, Exhaled Nitric Oxide, 6 Minute Walk Tests, Overnight Oximetry and end-tidal CO2 measurements.

To recognise and respect the patients right to confidentiality, privacy and dignity.

To be courteous and helpful, and sensitive to patients worries and concerns.

To assist other members of the team in maximising all aspects of patient care.

Perform routine calibration and quality control of equipment.

Communication

Communicate effectively with patients to ensure all assessments undertaken are performed safely and results of the best quality are obtained. Patient groups may include those where barriers to communication exist, such as patients with learning or other disabilities or whose primary language is not English.

Use appropriate methods of motivation, encouragement and persuasion to ensure accurate results are obtained whilst respecting the integrity of the person and working with them to achieve the best possible outcome.

Education and Training

Carry out work-based learning in the department as required to fulfil the requirements of the post.

Clinical Governance, Research and Audit

Operate in accordance with Good Scientific Practice

To be aware of the principles of clinical governance and understand what the benefits for patients and staff are.

To understand the clinical governance structure within the Trust and how you may be involved.
