The Inpatient Unit (IPU) Manager reports into the Deputy Director of Clinical Services and is responsible for leading the operational management of the inpatient nursing team and contribute to the delivery of the hospice strategy. The IPU Manager will work in close partnership with Clinical Services leaders to achieve a high quality of service in line with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards of care and requirements.

The IPU Manager will be a visible and approachable leader who clearly demonstrates the Hospices vision, values and service equity at all times. The IPU Manager will utilise their highly competent nursing skills to provide expert care of patients and their families and carers. The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and to supervise, where necessary, more junior nursing staff

Management

Maintain a skilled nursing presence to facilitate a team approach for nursing interventions and multi-disciplinary team working.

Promote professional standards of behaviour and ensure all staff are aware of their personal accountability and responsibilities.

Hold clinical responsibility for inpatient services.

Promote the safety, well-being and interests of patients, staff, volunteers and visitors to the inpatient unit.

Act as management lead for the inpatient nursing teams.

Promote and maintain positive professional attitudes and motivation within the inpatient nursing teams.

Promote a challenging but supportive environment for professional nursing practice.

Work with the Deputy Director of Clinical Services, and other Clinical Service leaders, to identify areas for improvement in service delivery.

Support the development and implementation of identified service improvements.

Co-ordinate with appropriate St Giles Hospice teams to ensure excellence in cleanliness and hygiene standards within the inpatient unit.

Ensure appraisals are conducted/allocated annually as part of the performance management of all IPU nursing staff and administrative support.

Ensure the completion of all e-learning and mandatory training by all IPU staff.

Identify performance/conduct/attitude improvement issues among staff and ensure supportive training and other improvement programmes are implemented, monitored, reviewed and reported.

Together with the Deputy Director of Clinical Services, manage any grievance or disciplinary procedures which arise, in line with policy and Human Resources advice.

Investigate complaints as requested by the Group CEO or Director of Clinical Services.

Have lead responsibility for the requisition of supplies, repairs and replacement of equipment within agreed budgets.

Lead in the recruitment, selection and induction of inpatient services nursing staff.

Monitor the quality and content of patient record keeping ensuring this meets the standards of the Nursing & Midwifery Council and the Care Quality Commission in liaison with the Deputy Director of Clinical Services and the Governance and Quality team.

Monitor medicines management ensuring compliance with hospice policy and professional guidance.

Take an intelligent and innovative approach to the use of all resources, especially staff and skill mix.

Ensure effective communication within the inpatient nursing teams and between them and the wider multi-professional team.

Clinical Effectiveness

Assess, plan and provide skilled, high quality, evidence-based nursing care for patients with palliative care needs, including the terminal phase, and support the family prior to and immediately after death.

Anticipate and respond to changing patient needs whilst maintaining their independence, privacy and dignity.

Critically assess clinical situations, interpret information, prioritise needs and plan appropriate care.

Work with all disciplines involved in the total care of patients and their families, integrating physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

Explore emotional issues including the insight of the patient and family regarding diagnosis, prognosis and preferred place of care and death.

Promote clinical excellence reflecting St Giles Hospice strategy.

Role model and deliver research/evidence-based practice within the inpatient nursing teams and across other clinical teams.

Demonstrate a pro-active approach to care evaluation to monitor effectiveness and to improve patient care outcomes.

In conjunction with the multi-professional team ensure that information provided to health professionals and patients is evidence based and within relevant national frameworks and guidance.

Assess and monitor risk in own and others practice, responding appropriately on the results to ensure safe delivery of care.

Develop an open and questioning culture within practice to enable professionals, patients and carers to participate in developing excellence in care.

Ensure the management of incidents, accidents and near misses within the IPU are both robust and effective and supports a learning culture.

Demonstrate a proactive approach to the development of policies, procedures and guidance which improve standards of care.

Developing Practice

Work rostered clinical shifts in practice if required.

Proactively monitor and develop the effective organisation and prioritisation of nursing care delivery.

Demonstrate advanced empathic interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with patients, carers and staff.

Demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills and innovative practice and role model excellence in holistic nursing care.

Support others in the effective assessment, management and evaluation of nursing care.

Actively foster supportive, honest and open working relationships within the multi-professional team to facilitate a positive workplace culture.

Working with the Deputy Director of Clinical Services and senior nursing team, conduct training needs analysis, using the results to support the development and delivery of ongoing education and training to improve patient care.

Deliver informal and formal training and development to staff, patients and carers in liaison with the Practice Educator for St Giles Hospice.

Identify and act on own training and educational needs.

Have sound reflective and facilitation skills and use these in practice.

Innovation and Change

Working across professional and organisational boundaries.

Ensure positive collaborative relationships and effective communications between all members of the multi-professional team, other hospice departments, external health and social care providers and service users.

Actively work to promote an understanding of the wider hospice organisation, its successes and challenges, amongst the nursing team.

Contribute to the internal and external palliative care agenda by attending relevant meetings and groups.

Support the Director and Deputy Director of Clinical Services regarding future nursing strategy for the inpatient units.

Encourage and enable the inpatient nursing workforce to contribute to hospice operational strategic development and implementation.

Promote the work of the hospice through attendance at conferences and the publishing of original work.
