This post is designed to provide senior support to the Gastroenterology inpatient team in their management of emergency admission. Additional clinical responsibility will include support of the outpatient endoscopy service, gastroenterology clinic and general medical oncall within the Division of Medicine at WWL.
The post will be based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and Leigh Infirmary and there may also be endoscopy outsourcing list opportunities. The post holder will work alongside a Consultant Gastroenterologists and be responsible to the clinical leads in Endoscopy.
The post holder will work alongside the established gastroenterology consultants to support provision of outpatient services. We would expect the post-holder to actively participate in at least one quality improvement and one audit project whilst in post. There will also be opportunity to join research with an established Gastroenterology research fellow.
Support of the Gastroenterology ward primarily in the afternoons by facilitating the junior team in terms of patient management and procedures. A morning service and/or training endoscopy list will be included in the timetable according to experience also with 1 supervised outpatient clinic and 1 emergency endoscopy list. Time will be available for audit/research and one session for patient or service-related administration work.
The post-holder will also be committed to supporting the weekly journal club and medical oncall rota or Gastroenterology oncall rota depending on clinical experience.
Clinical activity will be under the supervision of Dr Smith (Clinical Lead Gastroenterology) and Dr Keld (Clinical Director)
The post holder is expected to:
Have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defense organisations
Share in the cohesive, professional and patient centred approach of the existing department
Maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Integrate within, motivate and provide professional lead in a ward team
Liaise, communicate and co-operate with the Lead Clinicians, Managers and relevant colleagues The post holder is expected to have the following skills and attributes:
A wide experience in both outpatient and inpatient general gastroenterology and general medicine
Experience and training in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy
Membership of the Royal College of Physicians
Experience and interest in teaching
An appreciation and understanding of the role of management in the modern NHS
Evidence of engaging with clinical governance including audit
Excellent communication and leadership skills
