Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust require 2 dynamic and forward-thinking Consultants to join the Gastroenterology team. This post will be based at the University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) site: one of two acute sites operated by the Trust, with the other being Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Woolwich. The Trust provides services for the more than 666,000 people living across the London boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley. Each site has an increasingly busy Endoscopy department, performing more than 10,000 procedures each year. UHL also acts as the lead site for Bowel Cancer Screening across South East London.
We are currently looking for 2 Consultant Gastroenterologists. One with a specialist interest in IBD; the sub-speciality for the second can be explored more flexibly and we would invite anyone interested to contact our department for a friendly conversation around this.
The post is a 10 PA appointment, with the post-holder expected to undertake 2 endoscopy lists and clinics each week, while participating in in-patient ward work reviewing acute Gastroenterology admissions. The post holder will also participate in the on-call GI Bleed rota.
The Gastroenterology Department at UHL consists of 6 Consultants, 2 Registrars, a Specialist Doctor and three specialist nurses (IBD and viral hepatitis). The establishment at the QEH site includes 6 Consultants, 2 Specialist Registrars, 3 Clinical Fellows and 3 specialist nurses with responsibilities for IBD, viral hepatitis and endoscopy. A number of specialist Gastroenterology services have been established at the Trust including ERCP, oesophageal physiology, capsule endoscopy and fibro scanning.

Prime responsibilities:
- To undertake high quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
- To participate in the provision of a high quality out-patient Gastroenterology service, including patient administration
- To manage Gastroenterology in-patients
Key tasks:
- The post-holder will attend the weekly multidisciplinary meetings and weekly governance meetings
- Active participation in the management and development of thespecialty and the introduction of new services
- Contribute to the educational programme, including weekly departmental meetings and teaching
- Act as the joint clinical supervisor for SpRs in Gastroenterology
- Participation in Pathology and Multidisciplinary Team Meeting
- Participation in medical audit
- Participation in the Trust consultant appraisal process
- Comply with the requirements for Continuing Professional Development and revalidation as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians. The trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities
- A senior consultant will be nominated to each appointee to act as a mentor during the first 12 months in post
About us
a. Clinical Responsibilities.
The successful applicant will undertake two/three gastroenterology clinics with a general profile of 12 slots (5 new and 7 follow ups) and two overbooking slots and two/three endoscopy sessions consisting of 12 points per list. There will also be an involvement in the management of in-patients including a weekly morning round of gastroenterology patients admitted to the acute medical unit (AMU) and daily rounds of the gastroenterology patients when on the wards (shared between consultants). The main duties and responsibilities of the post include:
- To undertake high quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
- To participate in the provision of a high quality out-patient Gastroenterology service, including patient administration
- The post-holder will attend the weekly multidisciplinary meetings and monthly governance meetings
b. Medical Education & Teaching
- Contribute to the General Medicine educational programme, including weekly departmental meetings and teaching
- Act as the joint clinical supervisor for SpRs in Gastroenterology
c. Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
- Attend and actively participate in the regular gastroenterology governance meetings
- Undertake high quality audit projects and participate in the collection of data required to meet national quality standards. Under the supervision of consultants, junior doctors on the gastroenterology firms are expected to actively participate in high quality audit and present their data at national and international meetings. Junior doctors are encouraged to participate in research projects and publish case reports. The approach of the current consultants results in many of the junior doctors on the gastroenterology firm achieving at least once publication in a peer-reviewed journal or presentation at a regional or national meeting.
d. Continuing Professional Development
- Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level
- Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice
- Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy
- A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
e. Policy, Planning and Management
- Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care
- Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines
- Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service
- Comply with all Trust policies
- Contribute to good communications between the department and the other relevant staff/departments within the Trust, outside agencies including Social Services, General Practitioners, other Gastroenterology Departments in neighbouring Trusts and the Emergency Services.
- To lead or participate in the development of improved workflow through the Gastroenterology Department, ensuring better patient experience and increased efficiency. Flexibility in these sessions is necessary depending on the changing demands on the service.
All candidates must have an MBBS or equivalent, registered with the GMC, MRCP or equivalent and must have the CCT for Gastroenterology and General Medicine. Applicants with a wide variety of sub-specialties such as nutrition, hepatology and IBD are invited to apply.
