Roles and responsibilities
1.
Educational
1.1 Responsible for providing professional support and facilitation for PS, PA and students to ensure that the NMC Standards are met.
1.2 To lead in supporting PS, PA and students where issues arise in practice to ensure HEI policy is followed and to ensure that any student referral to Fitness to Practice is in accordance with the AEIs and NMC policy.
1.3 Work in partnership with others to contribute to systems that critically evaluate the effectiveness of learning and education activities with pre and post registration midwifery programmes
1.4 Ensure all midwifery students are orientated to the Trust and undertake annual updates, where appropriate.
1.5 Liaise with clinical leads and Health Roster team to ensure all midwifery students have their off duty recorded whilst undertaking placements within the Trust.
1.6 Enhance and support the role of PS and PAs ensuring that they meet their NMC requirements for SSSA. Contribute to the on-going learning needs analysis of these roles.
1.7 Lead on maintaining the Trusts midwifery supervisors database in accordance with the NMC Standards.
1.8 Lead on ensuring that the NMC requirements for annual updates and reviews of PS, PAs and practice educators take place and are recorded accordingly.
1.9 Deliver SSSA Study days to ensure adequate provision of supervisors and assessors across clinical areas
1.10 To work with AEIs to ensure midwifery students are allocated to clinical areas in order that they meet the NMC requirements for clinical practice.
1.11 Participate in facilitating feedback to the practice placement areas and AEIs following student evaluation of their practice placement experience.
1.12 Identify existing and potential learning opportunities for pre-registration student midwives within the Trust and ensure that they meet and continue to, the AEI and NMC requirements for utilisation as a practice placement.
1.13 Lead on identifying potential new practice placement areas and work with both the AEI and area manager to bring these into the placement circuit for pre-registration midwifery students.
1.14 To agree with clinical areas the number of midwifery students that can be supported in the area, and to continuously monitor this and to have the authority to amend this depending on current situations.
1.15 In conjunction with AEIs, to actively participate in selection and recruitment days for pre-registration midwifery programmes.
1.16 To lead on effective partnerships working between the Trust and their AEI partners/other key stakeholders by building and maintaining links between the organisations to support practice learning.
1.17 To actively contribute to the recruitment of the pre-registration midwifery students into Band 5 positions within the Trust.
1.18 Actively explore and develop opportunities for inter-professional learning and development of multi-professional networks to facilitate shared learning.
1.19 In conjunction with the management team, participate in the short and long term strategic development of the service and educational requirements within learning and development
1.20 Attend any meetings appropriate to your area/role, ensuring effective communication within the team and leading on actions are undertaken and applications of recommendations into the training and education programmes
1.21 Support the future development initiatives across the Trust providing development support for new or altered roles and practice.
1.22 Analyse and interpret policy documents relating to all aspects of professional regulation and develop local policy or guidance to ensure compliance to external standards.
1.23 Be able to support and deputise for child and adult practice education facilitators to support business continuity and student experience.
1.24 Lead on any other activities required to maintain and assure the quality of the clinical learning environment.
2.
Quality
2.1 Develop, plan and manage the educational audit of practice placement areas in partnership with ward managers and AEIs
2.2 Develop strategies and action plans to address deficits identified through practice placement audits to ensure that the placement environment provides an optimum learning experience
2.3 Contribute to systems that critically analyse the on-going quality of practice placement experience in conjunction with ward/area managers.
2.4 To lead on the planning, implementation and delivery of the midwifery student teaching programme.
2.5 To lead on the educational audits
2.6 To act as an effective role model and demonstrate effective organisational and leadership skills
2.7 Contribute to quality assurance and improved ways of working, incorporating evidenced-based practice.
2.8 Where appropriate lead on development of standards and audit for the implementation of changes to improve patient care delivery or patient safety.
2.9 Contribute to the annual training needs analysis and identify educational needs in relation to PS, PAs and practice educators for supporting midwifery students in practice.

4.1 Contribute to the development, implementation and validation of training materials used for pre and post registration midwifery students. To include competency based assessment tools, training records and electronic learning developments.
4.2 To monitor and review the effectiveness of training, and modify as necessary to meet the changing needs of patient care and the Trust.
4.3 Contribute to the development and updating of local evidence-based standards, policies and guidelines related to pre and post registration nursing students.
4.4 To participate in audit, review and evaluation of the learning and development team.

The Clinical Learning and Development team provides Trust wide clinical education, ranging from pre-registration, basic skills to advance interventional skills and knowledge.
You will be joining a dynamic multi-professional team with the aim to work as a practice educator for Pre-registration Midwifery in the Clinical Learning and Development team providing high quality education. The post holder will be the main point of contact for pre-registration midwifery, practice assessors and practice supervisors. This post is a part- time (15 hrs/ week) permanent post. The post holder will be co-ordinating the educational activities and assessments of learning.
The post holder will actively promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across the Division and Trust wide and be an effective role model for best practice.
The suitable candidate will be an experienced registered midwife with good clinical competence and excellent ability to teach and support learning.
To maintain and assure the quality of the clinical learning environment by providing support, educational input and development activities for supervisors, assessors and students from both pre and post registration midwifery education programmes, principally in clinical practice areas. To maintain and develop the learning and development assessment governance framework to ensure that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2Standards for pre-registration midwifery programmes and Standards for student supervision and assessment (SSSA) are met in practice. This will entail the development and maintenance of a learning environment where both education and lifelong learning are seen as integral to clinical practice. To work collaboratively with Accredited Education Institution (AEI) partners to support practice learning for midwifery students across the Trust, to ensure that the complete programmes for registration or recording a qualification with the NMC is accurate. To promote recruitment of midwifery students upon qualifying.
