To effectively manage delivery of the Interventional Radiology and fluoroscopy service at Northampton General Hospital and to provide information to assist the strategic direction of Interventional Radiology within the Trust.

The postholder will ensure the provision of the highest standards of patient care and contribute to the management of the Radiology Department. This person will be working closely within a multidisciplinary team.

To ensure appropriate day to day provision of the interventional service within national timescales for diagnostic tests.

To ensure rosters are in place at all times for staff ensuring continuity of service provision. This will include contingency arrangements to ensure service resilience at all radiographic locations within NGH.

Day to day management of Radiographers, admin & clerical staff, radiology assistants and students whilst working in the departments.

Provide clear clinical leadership for the day to day organisation of the service in accordance with professional and departmental protocols.

To carry out the full range of imaging /duties within specialised area, to a consistently high standard.

About us

Clinical duties

1. To undertake all Interventional Radiology procedures as specified by the Radiology Department protocol and in accordance with IR(ME)R 2

2. To ensure high imaging standards and to maintain the high level of patient care against national standards.

3. To perform manual handling duties that will include lifting/moving patients, moving trolleys and chairs, moving/lifting equipment/ other items following suitable manual handling training.

4. To ensure all patient imaging is recorded under the correct details and archived in accordance with IR(ME)R 2to allow diagnosis and future comparisons.

5. To be accountable for own professional actions and to act as a role model within the department, setting and maintaining high standards of professionalism and patient care and encouraging the development of a strong and flexible multi-disciplinary team.

6. Supervise Band 5 and Band 6 Radiographers, Link Grade Radiographers, student Radiographers, Trainee Assistant Practitioners and RDAs within the Interventional Radiology department.

7. Evaluating request forms and deciding the appropriate protocol and examination.

8. To site intravenous Cannulae for administration of IV medication pre, peri and post procedure.

Managerial

1. Contribute to the strategic service and business planning, including equipment purchase and future departmental development.

2. Responsible for stock control and purchase of consumables and necessary equipment for the service within budgetary limits.

3. Ensure Clinical Governance protocols are complied with, records are maintained as required and corrective action is taken where required.

4. To produce and maintain examination protocols in conjunction with Consultant Radiologists.

5. To formulate Operational policies and Departmental safety protocols.

6. Attend Departmental management meetings such as Superintendents meetings, line managers meetings and Chair Radiology staff meetings and Interventional Radiology business meetings.

Human Resource Management

1. Assist with the overall staffing strategy for Radiology Department. This will include the re-allocation of workload and/or resources as necessary.

2. Provide advice and guidance to any staff member within the Radiology Department. This includes

a. Recruitment and selection of radiographic staff, radiographic helpers, nursing staff and administration and clerical staff

b. Performing staff appraisals and Personal Development Plans

c. Maintenance of sickness and annual leave records

3. Line manager support to Radiographers and Radiology Department Assistants within the Radiology Department. This includes co-ordination and completion of annual appraisals.

4. Ensure imaging practice standards are monitored and kept up to date to maintain a quality service.

5. Participate in Radiology Department staff meetings.

6. Responsible for dealing with staff under the Trusts Human Resource policies for disciplinary and grievance procedures.

7. Ensure Health and Safety Legislation is adhered to and appropriate standards maintained within interventional radiology Department.

8. Liaise with the portering service to organise an efficient service in the Radiology Department.

9. Involvement in both general and specialised imaging where appropriate.

10. Ensure effective staff communication within the Radiology Department.

Department

1. Assist with co-ordinating Interventional Radiology and radiographic services within the Radiology Department and liaise with other wards and sections/departments within Radiology, to provide a comprehensive and efficient interventional radiology service for Northampton General Hospital.

2. Assist with and oversee the Quality Assurance processes within the Interventional Radiology department and liaise with the Medical Physics Department where necessary.

3. Ensure all infection control standards are adhered to, and high levels of cleanliness are maintained.

4. Oversee the implementation and adherence to all statutory regulations and legislation including the IR(ME)R 2and IRR 17 Regulations:

a. Justification, authorisation and optimisation of X-ray exposures

b. Duties and responsibilities of the Employer, Operator, Practitioner and Medical Physics Expert in the context of the regulations.

5. To have undertaken appropriate education and training in order to ensure the safe practice for the patient/ client, operator and associated personnel.

6. Ensure that the Radiology environment, equipment and facilities are managed within the context of the Trusts Health and Safety policies and that all staff are aware of their responsibilities.

7. Liaise with equipment manufacturers to ensure preventative maintenance is performed and faults corrected in a timely manner on expensive medical equipment.

Finance

1. Maintain stock control, via ordering and purchases of consumables and necessary equipment within budgetary limits

2. Negotiate maintenance contract to ensure value for money and service resilience.

1. Endeavour to provide a continuing improvement in service performance, within current guidelines and budgets.

2. Advise on the implications of performance trends in relation to resources, cost and service quality.
