The Pre assessment department in Milton Keynes University Hospital is a nurse led department that ensures all patients, on the elective surgical pathway, are supported both physically and emotionally until their surgery takes place.
Every patient undertakes a clinical review, either a telephone assessment or face to face assessment to establish their fitness for surgery. We collaborate with other members of the wider MDT to reach this conclusion and obtain information to assist the outcome.
High level communication skills both written and verbal are essential for a safe, effective and compassionate service.
As a Pre-Assessment Health Care Assistant, you will be organising blood recall clinics for elective surgical patients, ensuring they are prepared for surgery dates, under the supervision of the Pre-Assessment Nurse.
Daily responsibilities include performing nursing tasks such as phlebotomy, ECGs, and clinical observations. You will support the nursing staff with the daily pre-assessment clinics, provide direct patient care and monitor stock levels for the department.

The role of the pre assessment health care assistant is to assist the pre assessment nursing team to deliver safe effective care to the patients on their surgical pathway.
To independently prepare and implement the Blood test clinic daily.
To maintain a thorough knowledge of the setting up and the preparation required to maintain and run clinical sessions.
To assist the senior nursing staff in ensuring that all clinical equipment is kept in good working order and ready for use.
To promote the importance of good clinical practice throughout the department, acting as an ambassador for high standards and good patient care at all times.
The ability to be involved in influencing change to promote an effective environment for patients and staff.
To be involved in continuous development in keeping up to date knowledge on the healthcare assistant's role.
Support the use of competency assessments in the practice area.
Take lead on the blood test clinic.
To assist all team members as required in the direct delivery of patient care. Undertake/assist in personal care duties for patients when required. Ensure privacy and dignity is maintained.
Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to the patient and themselves.
To have knowledge of clinical observations, Phlebotomy and taking ECG with an understanding of the correct escalation process, making judgements on when to report patient conditions to a senior member of staff.
To assist in the induction of new staff within the department, demonstrating duties to new starters. Lead in setting an example to new starters to ensure safe and effective care.
To organise own daily workload, adjusting and prioritising appropriately as the department actively dictates.
Communicate factual information to patients regarding their condition within your clinical remit. Patients may have barriers to understanding such as a physical or mental disability, including dementia and so information will need to be delivered with tact, empathy, and sensitivity.
You may need to use persuasive skills to encourage patients to engage and undertake activities of daily living.
To ensure that patients, relatives needs are met in a courteous, helpful, and compassionate manner.
To ensure all visitors to the department are dealt with in a courteous and helpful manner.
To demonstrate and lead the team in a pro-active approach to maintaining overall tidiness and cleanliness of the ward/department and equipment. Complete cleaning logs as appropriate.
To complete relevant documentation as necessary.
To adhere to hospital policies.
