SACT Day services provide treatments for up to 160 patients per day. This unit treats different kind of cancer such as Breast, prostate, lungs etc. In the unit treatment administered such as systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) The team ensures smooth delivery of an enthusiastic nurse to support and provide the chemotherapy treatment to our patients. We are looking an enthusiastic SACT trained nurse who could join our team.

• The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the specialty.
• To be responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning delivery and evaluation of direct patient care.
• To take the lead on delegated responsibilities as defined by the Senior Sister/charge nurse and Matron.
• To support the charge nurse/senior sister/matron to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients
• To co-ordinate the day to day management of the SACT unit.
• To support the SACT outreach sites across the Greater Manchester area as required
• To manage, lead and motivate Band 5, 4 and 3 staff ensuring compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements.
• In the absence of the Senior Sister/charge nurse/Matron to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the SACT Unit.
• To ensure a positive focussed service incorporating patients 'feedback to maintain and improve patient care.
• To act as an effective role model promoting excellence through practice.

About us

CLINICAL:

1. Assessment and prioritisation of the needs of the patient undergoing SACT and their family. Specifically tasks such safe administration of SACT, managing SACT reaction or adverse reaction. Ensuring provision of client centred care which focuses on the promotion of health as well as illness.

2. Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards. Develop and maintain communication with people about difficult matters and/or in difficult situations.

3. Assess educational and informational needs of patient and family, providing up to date information enabling them to participate in the planning of care.

4. Enhance care within the clinical area by using relevant research outcomes when planning and delivering nursing care.

5. Evaluate nursing care communicate with medical staff of patients changing healthcare needs.

6. To be a role model for potential postholders by demonstrating competent skills that have been determined in accordance with the needs of the unit.

7. Maintain safe practice according to Hospital Policies and Standards.

8. Ensure all prescribed drugs and treatments are given in accordance with Hospital Policy.

9. Support SACT outreach sites as required.

10. Post holder will have attained UKONS (United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society) passport

11. Participates in ongoing implementation and practice of Clinical Governance / Clinical Risk Management, specific to the unit.

12. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of all equipment used in the care and management of cancer patients

13. Prepare patients for safe transfer to ward areas

14. This post requires manual dexterity to operate the full range of equipment used in the chemotherapy day care unit and to provide all elements of patient care. Moving and handling of patients and equipment will be carried out in line with Trust policies and training. The role involves transporting patients to areas within the Trust.

15. It will be necessary for the post holder to assist with various invasive procedures as appropriate for their level.

16. Standing for long periods during the shift and providing patient care that requires moderate physical effort. Emergency situations such as cardiac arrest will incur short periods of increased effort in delivery of resuscitation.

17. Providing care and communicating with patients undergoing cancer treatments requires intense emotional effort. The role involves emotionally distressing work such as supporting families and patients through the unpredictable course of illness and treatments.

18. Support junior staff whilst they care for very sick or unwell patient.

19. Distressed relatives are occasionally aggressive in their behaviour and distressed patients may be physically or verbally aggressive.

20. Post holders will be exposed on a daily basis to bodily body fluids and may be exposed to offensive odours.

21. Noise levels from equipment and personnel are increased at certain times according to activity and occupancy.

22. The post holder will need to be able to maintain patient care and accurate documentation concurrent with interruptions from colleagues, relatives and from other sources.

23. Mathematical calculations will need to be carried out with consistent accuracy throughout each shift. The ability to manage several things at one time is essential.

MANAGERIAL:

1. Provides effective, visible clinical leadership for the team, liaising with the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse as appropriate.

2. Deputise for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse as requested.

3. Is aware of financial considerations and makes judgements to maximise cost effectiveness and cost efficiency under the direct supervision of a Senior Sister / Charge Nurse

4. Assists the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to operate the unit in a cost-effective manner. This includes consideration of skill mix, agreed activity targets, & clinical standards to maintain a safe environment for both patients & staff.

5. Conducts individual performance reviews with allocated staff members, ensuring the development of appropriate learning objectives recorded within the Personal Development Plan.

6. Assists with the recruitment and selection of staff.

7. Exercises leadership & maintains awareness of the individual needs of the other team members

8. Help foster a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale, promoting a culture in which staff feel valued and able to reach their potential.

9. Support new ward staff and pre and post registered nurses.

10. Work with senior sister to ensure clinical standards of care are achieved and participate in audit of clinical care.

11. Be aware of responsibilities with regard to Health and Safety At Work Act.

12. Assist Senior Sister in initiating and implementing change, and in promoting an awareness of professional accountability.

13. Assist Senior sister, when appropriate, in the recruitment of new staff to the clinical area.

14. Actively participate in Clinical Risk Assessments and ensure correct documentation of Clinical Incidents in accordance with Hospital Policy.

15. Provide management support for the SACT day services junior staff and act as mentor to designated staff

16. Managing staffing levels and skill mix on a daily /weekly/monthly basis and following training, on a rotational basis and with the oversight of the senior sister, post holders will plan their individual team section of the unit rota.

17. Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence as per trust policy and in collaboration with the Department manager/Senior Nursing team

18. Regularly liaise and report to Department Manager/Senior Nursing team on unit affairs and staff development.

19. The post holder will assess conduct and performance of all staff whilst on shift and report any issues to the senior sister. They will address any immediate conduct or performance issues with staff on shift. They will participate in any performance management activity and ensure compliance with any policy that is being applied.

20. Maintain confidentiality with patient and staff information both at work and outside of working hours

EDUCATION:

1. Maintain own awareness of current nursing practice. Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards and up to date care offered to the patient with cancer.

2. Supervise clinical staff and disseminate knowledge and current developments.

3. Participate in planned programmes of appraisal with the senior sister.

4. Liaise with the School of Nursing, participating in the teaching of basic and post basic learners and training assessments, within the guidelines laid down by the NMC.

5. The post holder will provide teaching on mentorship to students, newly qualified nurses, and new starters as delegated.

6. Post holder will be competent in IV training and administration of SACT programme (UKONs passport) and ensure regular updates.

7. Participate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

1. In consultation with the senior sister to agree learning objectives designed to meet the goals of personal and professional development and undergo appropriate programmes of study and/or training.

2. Gain teaching skills by undertaking a teaching and assessing course and applying the principles in the clinical setting.

3. At the request of the senior sister, to accept responsibility to develop managerial skills within the clinical setting.

4. Participates in personal and staff individual performance review, developing a proactive Personal Development Plan.
