St Helena Hospice is looking for Health Care Assistants to join their Night Sitting Service within the Hospice in the Home team in Colchester. The role offers flexible full and part-time hours with shifts from 7:30 PM to 8:00 AM. Health Care Assistants will provide comprehensive physical, social, emotional, and spiritual care to patients in their homes, collaborating closely with families and under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager. Key responsibilities include working independently in patient homes, assisting with basic and complex dressings, monitoring patient conditions, and effectively communicating with the interdisciplinary team.

In addition to providing care, the position demands maintaining accurate patient records, ensuring confidentiality, and participating in staff meetings and educational programs. Health Care Assistants are also expected to provide post-bereavement support to families, help mentor new staff, and adhere to hospital policies, including infection control measures. This role is integral to ensuring a compassionate and supportive environment for patients in their final weeks of life.

St Helena Hospice is seeking Health Care Assistants, to work within the night sitting service in the Hospice in the Home team. The shift times are 7.30 pm - 8.00am, both full and part time hours will be considered.

The key priorities of this role are:

To provide physical, social, emotional and spiritual care in the patients home in agreement with the patient and family, and under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, SinglePoint.

To provide support to the registered nurses in responding to palliative and end of life patients in the last few weeks of life.

About us
Duties & Responsibilities:
To care for the person and their family holistically i.e. recognising the importance of physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of care.
To work unsupervised in the patients home.
To undertake simple dressings independently and assist the District Nurse/ Registered Nurse with more complex dressings.
To report back to SinglePoint any symptoms, concerns, changes or deterioration of the patients condition.
To take advice / instructions from St Helena Medical and Senior Staff on-call when necessary.
To communicate effectively with members of the interdisciplinary team, District Nurse, GP, Social Services etc.
To maintain accurate records of patient care in accordance with St Helena policy.
To ensure confidentiality of information at all times, in both written and verbal form.
To have awareness of the function and use of equipment used in the care of the palliative/end of life patient at home.
To adhere to St Helena uniform policy
To attend regular staff meetings and professional palliative care updates as well as other statutory updates.
To attend clinical supervision sessions.
To participate in educational programmes carried out within St Helena, as both provider and recipient.
To work in other areas if required (IPU / Day Services) as instructed to by the Service Manager or member of senior staff.
To visit a post-bereavement family at home if required (as part of the post-bereavement care). To provide emotional support and closure if required.
To mentor and direct new Health Care Assistants.
Ensure you follow all policies and procedures in relation to prevention and infection control
