Band Consultant: £105,504 to £139,882 a year + £2,162 LW per annum  FIXEDTERM   SPONSORSHIP POSSIBLE 

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) has a rare and exciting opportunity within our Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour service to appoint a full-time locus Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

The RNOH Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service and UCLH comprise the London Sarcoma Service (LSS), providing sarcoma care to a population of over 20 million and regarded as the largest such service in Europe. The successful applicant will work collaboratively within the LSS multidisciplinary team to provide highly specialised surgical care to patients of all ages with musculoskeletal tumours, including primary and metastatic bone tumours and soft tissue sarcomas. There may be an opportunity to pursue primary and revision arthroplasty. In addition, the successful applicant will undertake audit and quality improvement work to develop the service. There are opportunities to develop research and teaching initiatives with UCL and other academic partners.

We are looking for applicants who have relevant experience including relevant Fellowship training, good communication and team working skills and experience in multidisciplinary team working. A successful applicant will be enthusiastic and able to contribute to the further development of the service.

You must be fully registered with the GMC/GDC and hold a full License to Practice and be on the specialist register, or within six months of attaining CCT or equivalent at interview stage.

The appointee will:

  • Be appointed to a full time 10 PA job plan, with activities including ward rounds, theatre and clinic sessions, planning meetings, MDTs and patient related administration.
  • Provide in-patient and out-patient medical, surgical and rehabilitation care.
  • Contribute to audit, teaching, research and service development
  • Have clinical interests which complement those of the existing consultant team, for example in developing a service for patients with metastatic bone disease. An interest in arthroplasty may be possible for appropriately trained candidates.
  • Work with some flexibility to accommodate patients who are urgent or require procedures involving other surgeons or in other hospitals.

The new locum consultant is expected to have a varied range of clinical interests to compliment the skills of the existing consultant team in the department, the development of which will be supported.

About us

  • The postholder will be expected to maintain high clinical standards and undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility related to the care of patients in the Service, including attendance at weekly and monthly MDT meetings and cover for colleagues on leave and other authorised absences as appropriate.
  • The postholder will be expected to be actively involved in managing their team and the wider service. They will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as agreed and subject to job planning review.

The postholder will have access to a computer and shared office space with another Consultant/Senior Manager. Secretarial and clerical support to provide diary management, telephone enquiries/theatre scheduling is shared amongst the consultant body with a designated secretary and scheduler for each consultant.

  • The postholder will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit.
  • The postholder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development.
  • A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer prior to starting. Job plans cover all aspects of professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, and external responsibilities. The job plan will be reviewed after six months and thereafter annually.
  • The postholder will participate in the Service on-call rota, currently a 1 in 6 frequency.
