Main Duties of a Nursing Associate in Primary CareClinical Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessments: Conduct clinical observations, including blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels, temperature, and respiratory rate.
- Wound Care & Dressings: Perform simple wound care & dressings, and removal of sutures/clips.
- Chronic Disease Monitoring: Support management of long-term conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and hypertension through routine checks and patient education.
- Phlebotomy & Sample Collection: Take blood, urine, and swab samples for diagnostic testing.
- ECGs & Diagnostic Tests: Carry out electrocardiograms (ECGs) and other point-of-care tests.
- Administering Medications: Provide vaccinations, including child immunisations, flu vaccines, and other injections as required.
- Cervical Screening: Perform cervical smear tests in line with national screening guidelines.
- Health Promotion & Patient Education: Offer advice on smoking cessation, weight management, lifestyle changes, and self-care for long-term conditions.
- Supporting the Nursing Team: Work closely with Practice Nurses and GPs to deliver high-quality care.
- Infection Control & Safety: Maintain high standards of cleanliness and follow infection prevention protocols.
- Clinical Documentation: Ensure accurate record-keeping of consultations, treatments, and observations.
- Stock & Equipment Management: Monitor and replenish medical supplies.

Role Summary
To support the practice in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to complement existing workforce. This role will provide nursing support to the Practice Nurses and General Practitioners to ensure provision of holistic and person-centred care of the full range of nursing services to the entitled patient population.
This role will assist clinical staff across the practice in the provision of treatment, preventative care and health promotion. You will work as a member of the Nursing team, under the guidance of a Registered General Nurse, and must work at all times within your own competence and professional code of conduct as regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
You will be responsible for the care delivered, focusing on supporting patients to be healthy, monitoring of long-term conditions, health prevention and education advice and screening activities. You will work collaboratively to meet the needs of patients, ensuring the highest standards of care and supporting the delivery of policy and procedures.
Job Responsibilities
Work as part of the Practices Multidisciplinary team to provide and monitor care, under direct or indirect supervision
Improve safety and quality of care at every opportunity
Contribute to the delivery of integrated care
Work with the whole team to ensure delivery of nursing associate duties complement existing workforce
Provide support and supervision to Phlebotomists, Healthcare Assistants, and Medical Students on learning placements as required
Support registered nurses to enable them to be able to focus on the more complex clinical care
Develop relationships across the practice to support integration of the role across health and social care including primary care, secondary care, and mental health
Perform and record clinical observations such as blood pressure, temperature, respirations, and pulse
To provide routine care to patients as required in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF
To provide simple wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
Perform ECGs, and venepuncture, and other relevant clinical tasks as required by the practice, in line with the competencies of the role
With additional training take part in the routine vaccination programme using Patient Group Directives
Promote health and well-being to all patients, for example undertaking the NHS health check
Care for individuals with complex conditions such as dementia, mental health conditions, and learning disabilities
Advise patients on general healthcare and promote self-management where appropriate, including signposting patients to personalised care colleagues and local community and voluntary sector services
Communicate proactively and effectively with all colleagues across the Practice, attending and contributing to meetings as required
Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient health records
Enhance own performance through continuous professional development, imparting own knowledge and behaviours to meet the needs of the service
