Band Consultant: £105,504 to £139,882 a year per annum  PERMANENT 
Clinical involvement in the medical side of metabolic and bariatric surgical patients including pre and post operative management and follow up of patients.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint Consultant Chemical Pathologist with an interest in covering Clinical Chemistry, clinics in Lipid disorders and the medical aspects of metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Applications are invited for a new post of Consultant Chemical Pathologist to join the current Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Consultant Clinical Scientists working in Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

You will join an enthusiastic and forward-thinking clinically orientated team working to optimally develop the lipid clinical service, weight loss, the medical aspects of metabolic and bariatric surgery and the laboratory service.

The successful post holder will be appointed to a 10PA new position to cover the following clinical duties;

  • Offering clinical guidance and scientific advice and assistance to hospital clinicians and general practitioners on the selection, performance and interpretation of clinically relevant tests, and may be involved in relevant ward rounds/MDT discussions;
  • Working with the BMS, Clinical Scientist and MLA staff in the laboratory with clinically related queries;
  • Shared authorising of laboratory results and other laboratory-related tasks;
  • On call role out of hours providing clinical oversight to the Biochemistry and Toxicology service provided by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Direct clinical care in Lipid clinics working in the expanding lipid service which covers the trust area. This is an expanding service which covers; review of referrals to the service; assessment of new lipid clinic patients; review of those patients under lipid clinic care; oversight of those patients on hospital only lipid lowering medication. as well as an opportunity for further clinical sessions in areas of interest.
  • There will also be opportunity to be involved in the expanding tier 3 weight management service which will require medical oversight.
  • Clinical involvement in the medical side of metabolic and bariatric surgical patients including pre and post operative management and follow up of patients. There are specific areas which require medical input including overseeing need for very low-calorie diets and post operative metabolic issues. Involvement in the use of GLP1 agonist medication would be an area of responsibility with an opportunity to develop this service.

To support the expansion of our LIPIDS outpatient service and promote education and training to patients who are referred into the service, while also providing advice and guidance to primary care colleagues to manage patients in the community .
