The post-holder will lead and co-ordinate Perinatal Mental Health training and initiatives within maternity services; ensuring women and families are supported to maximise health and wellbeing opportunities. They will work collaboratively with the maternity team MDT as well as outside agencies to ensure a good quality Perinatal Mental Health Service to women and families during their maternity experience.
Over the past 12 months the George Eliot maternity service has received significant investment both for the estate which includes new theatres, the refurbishment of our inpatient ward and the relocation of triage and within the workforce in the form of new roles one of which being a perinatal mental health specialist midwife.
The main duties and responsibilities of the role sit under four headings:
Clinical / direct care practice
- Provide support and highly specialised advice to women with, or at risk of, perinatal mental illness. This may include women who have mandatory supervision applied.
Leadership and collaborative practice
- Actively contribute to the development of policies and guidelines, audit and research within maternity services, taking a lead role in the subsequent change process with particular emphasis on perinatal mental health.
- Take the midwifery lead in perinatal Mental Health care planning, for women with complex social needs, in conjunction with the perinatal team and/or local community mental health services.
Improving quality and developing practice
- Lead on developing pathways/processes to ensure that there is routine screening and early identification of women with, or at risk of a mental illness.
Education
- Develop and provide patient education and information which is appropriate and responsive to individual needs and level of development.
About us Clinical / direct care practice - Supplement the care provided to women with complex needs and their families, for example working with women and their midwives to develop individual care plans, and making referrals to additional specialist support where required.
- Act as an advocate for women to ensure they get the specialist mental health care they need.
Leadership and collaborative practice - Provide clinical and professional leadership with specialist advice and support in relation to perinatal mental health.
- Develop and maintain a basic working knowledge of mental health legislation, policy and guidance.
- Provide a link between midwives, GPs, health visitors, obstetricians, specialist mental health services and other agencies in relation to the care of pregnant women and new mothers with mental health problems.
Improving quality and developing practice - Maintain awareness and application of relevant research and evidence based practice relating to area of clinical expertise and profession practice.
Education - Ensure that midwives are aware of care pathways for women with mild, moderate and severe mental illness and deliver their contribution to these, including the provision of information andsupport, and the prediction and detection of mental illness.
