Job summary

We are inviting applications to fill our Clinical fellow vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Oral and maxillofacial Department. This post is aimed at individuals who wish to extend their experience of maxillofacial surgery; tailored job plans are available for those interested in research or teaching, and if appropriately qualified, support will be given in achieving CST competencies or DCT3 equivalence. We offer exposure to the full breadth of the specialty in a supported learning environment.

This is a one year contract commencing on the 03/09/2025. Part time / job share applicants will be considered. Candidates must be registered with the General Medical Council or General dental Council and hold a license to practice.

The oral and maxillofacial unit at Leeds is a large major trauma and oncology unit comprising of 11 consultants with subspecialty interests in head and neck cancer and microvascular reconstruction, complex facial trauma, orthognathic, TMJ, salivary, dentoalveolar, paediatric, and craniofacial surgery; 6 registrars, 10 DCTs, and 8 specialty dentists.

Duties will include:

Management of inpatients including post op and acute admissions

Independent minor ops lists

Operating theatre and outpatient clinics

Discussions with relatives

Initiation/change of treatment

Participation in the on call rota

BACKGROUND

The Oral and maxillofacial department in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and appropriately trained colleague to this post for 12 months in a 1 year fixed term role.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

General Training and Qualifications Full registration with the GDC and/or GMC.

Experience:

Applicants shall have completed at least 2 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration including at least 1 years hospital experience in the field of OMFS.

Applicants shall have adequate experience of assessment, diagnosis and treatment in both the acute and out-patient OMFS setting and within the secondary care system. It is desirable (but not essential) for applicants to have completed post graduate exams where possible.

Personal Attributes:

All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical/dental topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:

That applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical/dental training in English; or

have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Overall 7, Speaking 7, Reading 7, and Writing 7. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.

They will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilities that a clinical fellow post brings.

Clinical Governance:

The post holder will be required to participate in the clinical audit of departmental work and may work with members of the team, under Consultant supervision. It is expected that they will complete audit projects and complete the audit cycle during the post, and for this to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity (or part of one). It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy). In the discharge of these responsibilities the appointee will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

This department is currently based across three sites within the Trust.

1. Leeds Dental Institute

2. Wharfedale Hospital

3. Leeds General Infirmary

All inpatient services are concentrated on the Infirmary site with outpatient and local anaesthetic services being carried out at the Dental Institute. The department has access to a dedicated Day Case Unit based at the Dental Institute. There is an outpatient outreach clinic at Wharfedale Hospital.

The Department currently provides a service for secondary referrals for the local population received from dental and medical practitioners. It also provides a service for tertiary referrals for complex craniofacial trauma, craniofacial deformity and oncology.

This job is busy and exciting, and you will see a large volume of trauma, oncology, adult and paediatric facial deformity, salivary gland, cleft lip/palate and craniofacial surgery.

All in-patient care and operating is undertaken at the Leeds General Infirmary which is directly attached to the Leeds Dental Institute (LDI). Our hospital is a specialist regional centre for cleft lip and palate, undertakes Craniofacial and Osseodistraction surgery and is the regional Major Trauma Centre (MTC), providing exciting experience in the management of the multiply injured patient. The head and neck ward (L23) is located on G floor in the Jubilee wing and is a dedicated Maxillofacial/ENT/Neurosurgery ward. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery out-patient department is based at the LDI. Our unit and department has excellent facilities of multiple consulting rooms, dedicated minor surgical suites and a day surgery general anaesthetic theatre, where a large volume of LA, sedation and GA work takes place.

MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT

The Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department comprises of 11 Consultants, 4 Specialty Registrars, 2 senior clinical fellows, and 9 Specialty Dental Surgeons. You will be part of a close knit team of 8 DCTs, 2-4 LDFTs, 1 FY1, and 1 FY2. We have a large and dedicated nursing staff together with excellent secretarial support. Our Unit has a strong team ethos and our aim is to deliver exceptional care for our patients, and provide quality in our teaching and training for our junior staff. We have close links with both the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Leeds.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The postholder will be expected to provide first on call out of hours on-call rota. The on call is full shift and resident. There are non-resident registrars as second on call, and consultants out of hours.

Discussions with relatives

First on call management of the acute take

Contribution to Clinical governance.

Assistance/supervision of more junior colleagues.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

A weekly formal teaching programme is provided alongside more informal on the job training. There are opportunities to deliver teaching to both medical and dental students. We have links with both the dental and medical school, and the department has an impressive research record, and there are opportunities to participate/be supported in research.

This job is suitable for the appropriately qualified candidate to apply for DCT3 equivalence, and we will support you in this. Similarly support in gaining CST competencies is available.
