MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


CLINICAL PRACTICE

    • Maintain high standard of nursing care and service provision for the prevention, treatment and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV and other blood borne infections.
    • To learn and perform new clinical skills relevant to this area of work e.g. microscopy, venepuncture, history taking and genital assessment.
    • To advise patients in relation to STIs, HIV and BBV prevention and sexual health maintenance.
    • To promote sexual health and wellbeing through advice and information giving.
    • To assist the healthcare support worker (HCSW) to set up clinics, maintain equipment and order supplies if required or perform this task in the absence of the HCSW.
    • To observe clinical policies, protocols and working guidelines and to contribute to developing these.
    • To liaise with nursing colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
    • To work closely with external agencies to ensure coordination between services.
    • To undertake outreach work as necessary.
    • To provide nurse led sexual health consultation for asymptomatic and non-complex cases.
    • To obtain clear and relevant histories from patients.
    • To examine patients and obtain appropriate clinical specimens.
    • To observe the HIV testing policy.
    • To carry out point of care testing for HIV managing negative results and referring patients to senior clinician if results are reactive.
    • To treat patients within the confines of patient group directions (PGDs).
    • To arrange prescription of treatments (not covered by PGDs) and safely administer/supply these.
    • To have a good knowledge of all contraception methods.
    • To treat patients under the confines of PGDs for Emergency Hormonal Contraception to patients and refer trained clinician for on-going methods of contraception including quick starting methods.
    • Take part in partner notification processes.
    • To perform microscopy according to protocol (dependent on site of work).
    • To maintain clinical case notes ( electronic patient records) to a high standard.
    • To recognise signs and symptoms of complex and unstable health problems requiring medical review.

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
