As a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, based at Southport Hospital (PR8 6PN), you will assess and manage adults admitted with dysphagia and communication needs linked to frailty and ageing. The role spans the whole inpatient journey — from A&E admission to inpatient care and safe, timely discharge — working closely with Frailty Practitioners, geriatricians and the wider MDT. You’ll join a growing, supportive SLT team that includes a consultant SLT, highly specialised clinicians, newly qualified therapists and assistants, and contribute to regular Video fluoroscopy clinics, an established FEES service and MBSImP protocol. The post requires weekend contribution as part of a 6/7 day service and involves cross-site working across hospital and community settings.
This permanent, full-time Band 6 position (salary £38,682–£46,580) suits an HCPC-registered therapist with a degree in Speech and Language Therapy and a postgraduate dysphagia qualification, who enjoys autonomous clinical work, teaching and service development. You’ll provide direct patient assessment and tailored care plans, offer training to staff and carers, help shape care pathways and departmental protocols, and maintain CPD and clinical governance standards. The Trust’s strong reputation (Outstanding CQC rating and recognised as a top place to work) means excellent scope for development while working within a team that values empathy, practical support and work-life balance.
